It seems like I'm constantly telling him to speak softer. It's borderline yelling and he doesn't realize how loud he's speaking until someone tells him. Could he have a hearing problem? He'll be in the second grade this fall and does well in school.

Have his hearing checked. Most people who are hearing impaired don't realize they are talking louder than they need to.

My brother does that, hes Autistic... Does your son have any "awkward" characteristics? Such as rocking back and forth constantly, or not eating anything except a few select foods? It's difficult with him but we just got a worker to come in the home and work a few hours with him, Its interesting you mentioned that because that what he's working on right now!
On the other hand there may be something wrong with his hearing, It would never hurt to go to the doctors and get it checked out or ask your doctor the same question you asked us would it?

You could check his hearing. Probably nothing is wrong with it.

You could check how much background noise there is - maybe he can't filter it out well right now.

You could ask yourself if you pay attention the first time he speaks.

Probably none of those and it is just a normal seven year old boy thing.

Then you need to train him to use an inside voice. It takes time. Have him repeat what he sadi or asked in a appropriate volume before you answer. Tell him your ears hurt, and he needs to turn his volume control down two notches. Pretend to use a remote on him to adjust his volume. It takes time, but he should learn.

Otitis Media and young kids are like peanut butter and jelly.

Commonly known as Ear Infections - when they aren't inflamed there may be fluid backups in the inner ear...

They may grow out of it but then again it may be chronic. Go to the doctor and keep an eye on the ears!

Try calling his name softly behind him. This is to test whether he's got hearing problem.
If yes, send him to doctor.
If not, try to record his voice using a recorder and than play it back to let him hear his own voice, he may realizes his own problem.

hearing impaired or he's just plain annoying. ha. Just kidding. Do you have to talk loudly for him to hear you? If so, he probably needs to see a doctor or a thurough ear cleaning.
