Is it possible that great thinkers of the past made us think that there is God?

hmmm...chicken and egg question again

depends on whether you believe in religion or science: if you are religious, then God made man, no questions answered; if you are scientific, hey there's no proof of God, so we made it up to satisfy the innate yearning for a 'father figure'

does not matter to me because we need God no matter where or who we are

and there is no right and wrong answers to these questions, just a matter of persepective

Men created God so they could control the majority of the people (peasants in those days). However most of the Great Thinkers did not do this. It was the men who wanted power and money.
Think of the Catholic Church. Why do the priests have to remain celibate? So they won't have any children and all their money and possessions will be left to the church. Look at all the expensive gold, silver, etc things the church has. Who paid for all of this. The poor working people who were convinced to tithe at least 10% of their earnings every week. In the beginning these men couldn't get enough peasants interested so they 'borrowed' (& kept) many pagan celebrations - such as the decorated tree that was originally a pagan way to break up the harsh winters. The Catholic Church renamed it the Christmas Tree. Worked great - brought in lots of people. Do some research, lots of what people believe about various religions was originally something else that had nothing to do with any kind of god.

Did God give you good english? No.

If God did not make man, then man made God out of his intelligence, but that would not make sense, as something with lesser intelligence cannot make something of greater intelligence.

Also, if man came about without God, then the process to create our intelligence must have been more intelligent than us, so if this was not God, then it would have been another intelligent being (more intelligent than us).

Where this intelligence then came from is more of a conundrum, as if it does not have God qualities, then the process continues. So therefore God must have made us, or we are not intelligent, and if this is the case then all our arguments are meaningless, and all human statements must be regarded as unintelligible.

Man made God. God is a spirit that exists in each of us. Some people found a way to put their face on the spirit and market it. The sheep who didn't believe in themselves bought it. Most of the great prophets and leaders have said "Look not here nor look not there for the kingdom of God is within you."

It is impossible to say. It's like saying which came first the chicken or the egg. One thing I do know is that man made the chicken a main dish the same as they made God a vengeful and frightening tyrant to those who disagreed with him....as opposed to the loving guy who invented the poppy, the puppy and the pussy...
