The real question should be...why did Lebanon allow the Hezbollah terrorists to destroy the country in the first place. The United Nations (without any plan to enforce the edict) ordered Lebanon to seal its southern border, and to disarm Hezbollah. Lebanon did neither. It is sad, but today Lebanon is paying the price by having the edict enforced by Israel.

Lebanon is being destroyed. The destruction of its infrastructure and the collective punishment of its people only hurt those who want peace. In its actions, Israel has managed to make Hezbollah more popular in the Middle East, even in parts of the Arab world that opposed them or were indifferent to them. The Israeli campaign is completely misguided in its targeting of the infrastructure. Hezbollah's militant arm is a guerilla group... they don't need infrastructure. They thrive on a lack of it. What Israel is doing is destroying the ability and drive of those who oppose Hezbollah within Lebanon. The only thing they should have been doing is targeting Hezbollah. In that way, Lebanon's pro-west government would have gotten stronger, not weaker. It's a ridiculous lack of foresight on the part of Israeli strategists and civilians in Lebanon and Israel are paying the ultimate price with their lives. Israel will undoubtedly survive this war. Lebanon may not be able to effectively recover.

I hope, NO.
Actually, Israel is doing everything possible to avoid Lebanon destruction and government failure. Sounds funny? Nope. If it would not be the only Arabic democratic country in Middle East, the problem would be resolved much faster by ground operation. Besides the only fault of the Lebanese government that it is week and unable to destroy Hezbollah themselves.
World gives Israel one more week to destroy Hezbollah infrastructure. After that UN will step in enter the South Lebanon zone. And Israel already discusses plans of the possible help it will provide to Lebanon to re-build the country and even the army. Lebanon is beautiful country with big Christian presence. It should survive.

I sure hope not....that would be a sad day in history if Lebanese culture was wiped out. I hope and pray that the innocent people that are caught in the middle of this conflict in Lebanon find some sort of peace. They have had to put up with so much over the last 25 or 30 years.

define destroyed. i think that if the campaign keeps up for more than an additional week the israelis will, indeed have "turned back the clock on lebanon 20 years". now if they could just bomb them back to pre mohhamed days the world would be a hell of a lot better off.

Probably the capital and the southern part. If Lebanon doesn't do something to stop Hezbolloh, Israel's gonna pound it with artillery and air strikes day after day.

No, but Israel will be, they've already shattered any shred of credibility they had. Lebanon, possibly, Israel has nukes and not much to lose.

I suspect Isreal's goal here is to ensure that Hezbollah is so severely hurt, that it cannot sustain a threat to them from the Lebonese border.
