I have recently dealt with a bad period of insomnia so I feel for you. Mine lasted for several months. There were nights, I couldn't sleep at all. It got to the point where my heart was racing when I even thought about trying to sleep that night. If you don't have any medical reasons for your insomnia (apnea, restless leg, etc), then you are probably just like me and so many others. We are the ones getting in the way of our own sleep. You probably used to be able to sleep well like I used to. How often did you think about falling asleep then? Probably never. You just did! You didn't plan things out during the day to figure out how to make yourself tired at night. It just happened naturally. That's the only way sleep can happen. When you take a pill, you still don't get natural refreshing sleep. So my advice to you from my own experience is...don't worry about it! Trust me! I know that is hard to do. How could you not worry about it? What helped me was realizing that I could survive even if I didn't sleep. I felt worn out but I could still go on. I started looking at bed time as an opportunity to relax and just let my mind drift about things that I was looking forward to or good memories in the past. And wouldn't you know it, as soon as I stopped thinking about falling asleep and focused on other pleasant things, I would doze off. I still don't have perfect sleep but 9 out of 10 nights, I can fall asleep within 15 minutes. I do exercise more now also. That never hurts. But mostly, it's just a matter of distracting myself with positive thoughts. I hope this helps you and may you have sweet dreams.

The most important thing is to look into the causes of insomnia.
Nervous system over excitation can prevent a person from being able to sleep. Mania , Hypomania , Bipolar disorder , Anxiety disorders , extremes of depression , substance abuse and alcoholism are common causes. Cardiovascular , endocrine and respiratory disorders can also cause the same. The first step should be to get a physical with a Physician . Now a days very good nonhabit forming pills are available to help people sleep. Lunesta, Ambien , Roserem are few examples.
Non pharmacological measures include observing patterns of sleep hygiene (http://www.umm.edu/sleep/sleep_hyg.html , yoga , hypnatism and massage therapy .
Sex is also a well known sedative . Sex with your boy friend daily can help you get a good night sleep.

Go to a doctor and have him prescribe you sleeping pills. You also may need to see a therapist. Get plenty of exercise. Try taking a hot bath or shower right before you go to bed, listen to soothing music, drink sleepy time tea, and just relax. Also write down any thoughts that are running through your head. I've been dealing with insomnia for most of my life and it sucks but you'll get through it.

Instead of asking your doctor for a typical sleeping pill, ask them to prescribe HYDROXYZINE 10 mg tablets ( usually a decongestant ). If you take 5 tablets, you'll fall asleep in one half to an hour. I recommend these because they are NOT addictive and you do not build up a tolerance to them.

Well, a no fail for me is a college text book. A subject you have no interest in should do it. No, I am not kidding! My friend has trouble sleeping and I suggested this, at which she scoffed at me. My friend was going through a "spell", as she calls it, and in desperation tried it. I am happy to say it put her to sleep.

i have sleeping problems too. you are supposed to exercise early in the day, maybe read before bed (somewhere other than your room). make sure your room is dark & quiet, and dont do anything except sleep... no tv! sometimes the hum of a fan also works!

try going to your doctor and maybe he can prescribe some sleeping pills. (if you havent yet).
i dont know what else to tell you in this situation, but i think getting medication is the best way out.

get a rubber mallet and a friend. around bedtime, have the friend hide behind something with the rubber mallet and strike you square in the forehead when you aren't suspecting it. then have your friend stick you in your bed and lock up your house.
