TRAINS!!! Or, any toy that makes loud noises! At 3 years old, my son is just beginning to develop his imagination, so he is more drawn to toys that stimulate his imagination and allow him to pretend play. He has always loved trains, but now he will play with them using his imagination rather than simply watching how they move. Along with the pretend-play stage has come an interest in playing with anything that simulates real, adult life. He now loves playing "doctor" and pretending to give me a check-up. He pretends to be the dog's doctor, too, but the poor dog is not as excited about that game! He likes to pretend he is cleaning the house with his own broom set, too. He also loves to use play-dough because it's messy and squishy! Recently, he has wanted to make "food" using the play-dough and insists that we pretend to eat the food together. The imagination is great!

My boys ages 2 and 4 both love their "bug vac", and bug hut. They can suck up bugs ($15) and put them in the hut ($5). They also love the pop up tents or tunnels. (great cuz they collapse to be really small for storage) Play Doh is always good with some of the toys that go along to make shapes, etc. Color wonder finger paints and Markers are always a hit too.
Mega Blocks are a great too also.

I would recommend that you not buy anything that has the following characteristics:
1. Breakable(don't buy into the it's unbreakable or toddler proof, it's fairly obvious that they have never met my son)
2. Nothing that could permanently mark any part of another person(particularly siblings)
3. Nothing flammable (enough said)
4. Nothing that could not be washed( You try washing ice cream, mud, cat litter, his brother's blood, out the hair of his Woody doll)
5. And finally, what ever you do decide to buy, remember he will prefer to play with the box it came in.
Good Luck

Children love puzzles! Any manipulative toy is great for his fine motor development. Boys love dump trucks to use in a sandbox or dirt. They also like anything "real." They like to use things adults have that is child sized. Check out these site for some great stuff!

My son really liked the Little People toys by Fisher Price. They come in every ethnicity & also have animals, cars, houses, etc. Actually I can't think of what else he use to play with.

Anything that encourages imagination or anything that enhances fine motor skills. My son loves puzzles, fake money, his "memory" game, his tool bench, and his fake weed wacker that looks just like daddy's. My sister just bought him a toy (but functional) metal detector. He loves it! I hide quarters around the yard and he searches for "treasure". He loves his "bug catching kit" too. Wow, I better stop before I realize how spoiled my son is!! Hope I've given you some good ideas!

Depending on how much you are willing to spend, they love the physical stuff..the miniature trampolines, the bouncy castles, and even a $20 big purple exercise ball from the exercise dept. at Target. Just love it. They'll roll around on that for hours. And it is great for their coordination skills.

Cars, cars, cars, and cars! My son who will be 4 soon loves his cars...they are the most simplest, inexpensive toys he has and he plays with them for hours....and a carring case to put the cars in too. At their age they love to put things away and get them back out and they will do it over and over.
