In Freemasonry, the 33rd degree is an honorary level that can be obtained only by a vote of one's peers (levels 1-32 can be earned by study and testing).

So you're either talking the Masons, or maybe Mortal Kombat or even Paradise Lost. I recommend checking out "Paradise Lost"--the masterpiece by John Milton. It's very "Goth," and will prove the most satisfying after you get into it (even if it's not the answer to your original question).
