I've taught history for 10 years and seen this term in history text books, historical fiction, documentaries, films, etc. I've never found an answer to where it originated, and my students also want to know!

It was because a large number of germans were either caught or found carring gas cans which we called jerry cans. Germany had a fuel problem

I believe that was a British term, primarily, that some GI's may have picked up and used here and there.
Most American's used "kraut" and "Nazi" as standard labels.
In your studies, I hope you've read some Stephen E. Ambrose books.
As an ironic aside, the bulk of the American soldiers in Europe were of German extraction within 3 generations. Didn't hinder their abilities to do the job.

The name is likely an alteration of the word German. Others have claimed that the WWI German helmet, shaped like a chamber pot or jeroboam was the initial impetus for creation, this is almost certainly revisionist history.

They also called them 'krauts'...I dunno...they called the Japenese 'japs'. I guess...if you assign someone a derogatory name and refer to everyone in that group with it...it makes it easier to disrespect them and thus, make it easier to fight them.
