You can easily tell my dog she is a female simply by looking at her face and watching how she acts, but I have seen other female dogs who look like male dogs. Obviously you can tell my checking if the dog has a penis, but I am talking about the appearance in general?

Is it the excess of the sex hormone estradiol?

There are so-called "Doggy Bitches", which means she has some male characteristics. The theory is during pregnancy, the puppy fetuses are not gender specified and crowded together. When the hormones that determine gender start pumping to the pups, if a female is wedged between two or more boys, she gets a little extra testosterone, causing her to be a little more "doggy" or male.

In each breed, there are distinct differences between males and females. The breed standard describes these differences.

You might be confusing masculinity and femininity, whereas a person who is knowlegeable of a particular breed could easily tell a male from a female without looking between the dog's legs.

There are lots of male dogs out there that look feminine, simply because of their breed (like the papillon, the bichon frise, etc.) I think that maybe your dog simply posesses characteristics that we attritube to females and that she doesn't necessarily "look" one way or another. An interesting experiemnt would be to line her up against other male and female dogs of the same breed and see if she still looks "girlie." Of course, this is impossible if she is a mixed breed.

I doubt it. Our Golden is female and she is such a girly girl. It's just personality. My Mom has 4 boxers-2 and 2. One female is a girly, the other is "aggressive" (as aggressive as a 10 year old overweight momma dog can be I guess). One of the males is very athletic (plays fetch, runs around, jumps, etc), the other is a couch potato.
