"A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast..."
The word translated into English Bibles as "life" in this verse is in the original Hebrew "nephesh", which literally means soul.
"A righteous man regardeth the nephesh (soul) of his beast..."
I've seen a lot of answers saying animals don't have souls and i'm wondering if anyone has ever noticed the Bible's answer to this question, beyond the descriptions of animals in Heaven - lion laying down with the lamb, etc., and the fact that in the Garden, God told Adam and Eve to "take care of the earth and the animals."
Didn't there have to be a reason for this? Do you see a bigger picture going on, or do you think animals are just learning props for humanity's journey?
PETA - have you never noticed this?

I believe that more animals have souls than many humans! I've never seen an animal cause the kind of horrors that humans have done on this planet. Most of my dogs were more kind, honest and faithful than I could ever hope to be...

I believe that anything in which the breath of life is active is a living soul. I also believe that souls do not go to heaven when the body dies. I am a Christian, and I believe that heaven and paradise are two different states of being. Heaven is where God and the angels reside. Paradise is where Jesus said the repentant thief would be with him. I believe that paradise might be another state of being between heaven and the earthly realm. I don't believe there is a purgatory, not is there really a hell. I believe hell is separation from God. I don't think this is "rocket science", but apparently it is to some people.

PETA as their collective heads up their a$$. Don't know about Christians but many Pagans believe animals have what some call a soul. Native Armenians it is basic to their believe that everything has a soul because everything is part of a greater whole including god.

I think animals have souls. I think the verse means that the righteous care and the wicked are doing kind to get something in return.

The fact is, humans don't have souls either. THEY ARE SOULS.
Look it up.
Also, man was placed here as a CAREGIVER AND A LITTLE ABOVE the animals to tend to and care for them, much the way WE would want God to tend to and care for us, with proper love, respect and tender care. Would you not want that yourself? Adam himself had each animal come before him so he could meet and study and then name them properly, even before Eve was created. So we see here that Man had already started his caregiving job in paradise when sin interrupted it.
Animals are not placed here as "props" but as companions to man, to love him as we love them.

Maybe when they refer to "beast" they mean the beast within. Man is at times civilized and at times a beast.
