Astronomically, what occurs on that day is an alignment between the galactic and solar planes. Specifically, the winter solstice sun will conjunct the Milky Way, which is the edge of our spinning spiral galaxy. The place where the sun meets the Milky Way is where the "dark-rift" in the Milky Way is - a black ridge along the Milky Way caused by interstellar dust clouds This is a feature of the Milky Way anyone can see on a clear midsummer's night. At dawn on the winter solstice of A.D. 2012, the sun will be right in this dark-rift, and the orientation is such that the Milky Way rims the horizon at all points around. Thus, the Milky Way "sits" on the earth, touching it at all points around, opening up the cosmic sky portal. The galactic and solar planes are thus aligned. "Sky portal" is just a term to describe the "opened sky" scenario apparent when the Milky Way rims the horizon. This is not to be confused with the "dark-rift" itself."

You have the astronomy correct. You didn't mention, however, that this alignment only happens every 26,000 years.
When the sun conjuncts the dark rift in the milky way, which the Maya believed to be the birth canal of the universe, it is being reborn. The reborn sun signifies the start of a new world age.
HOWEVER, there is a huge misconception that beginning=end. It doesn't. Think about when you go to the movies. The movie you are watching ends. Does another movie start immediately? No. There's a period in between where everyone who isn't staying leaves the theater, it gets cleaned up, the film gets reset, etc. Basically we are in that "in between" time right now. I've read a variety of end-dates for this world, going back to 1987 at the Harmonic Convergence (my personal choice for the end).

Okay, just tell me something: How many times, throughout Earth's 4-billion-year history, has this "alignment" happened? Many times, I would imagine. Yet, here we all are, safe and sound. Why would the world come screeching to a halt just because the galactic and solar planes align? I'm sure it will look really cool, but you'll still be alive the next day, so don't think you can get out of buying Christmas presents that year. :o)

I too have heard about the Mayan projection...It could mean the time people speak about the second coming of Christ...could mean New World Order...Could be when God changes the earth's present program...I think something is significant about it.

i thinks it means "rebirth" in thought religion and our place in the cosmos. Maybe "man" will elevate his understanding and start a "new world order" aka the kingdom of the antichrist. research the new world order!!!

i don't know about the world ending but they do have the most accurate calender this world has seen so you never know???
