For the past 10 years of my life, I was going to be a member of the fascinating, incredible world of journalism. It didn't matter-- writer, author, reporter, journalist-- something like that. I'm very, very talented at writing and I have focused everything that I have done in life to cater to my ability. I've been looking at those crazy, liberal arts colleges, putting all of my effort into managing my high school's newspaper, writing my college essays six months in advance-- all of that.
Unfortunatley, the more I think about it, the less sure I am that I am on the writing path when it comes to my future career.
I have developed another interest, one that interests me equally, possibly even more so-- medicine and health. I kind of want to explore the option of being a doctor. I'm not sure what kind of doctor, but definitley a doctor-- but I'm afraid to enroll in medicial school just yet.
I told my parents about it, and they kind of laughed it off. How do I tell them I'm serious?

Go with your gut, I studied journalism, hated it , then enrolled in law school, lucky for me I got accepted, it was the best decision I ever made. As far as your parents go, just be honest with them and tell them the reasons why you don't feel that journalism is not right for you. Best of luck!

You are still 4 years away from medical school, hon. You are going to have to SHOW them you are serious, not just tell them. And you're going to need a 4.0 GPA to get into one if you're not a member of a minority.

Go to a good college and get a Bachelor's in Chemistry or another science. You can still minor in journalism or something if you want. If you can get through the freshman pre-med "weed out" period, your parents will take you seriously about your career change. But be prepared to fund medical school on your own via loans or whatever - your parents may not have saved enough money to pay for that.

Best of luck to you.

You can major in anything and get into medical school. So, you can major in journalism and still go on to medical school (just be sure to minor in something that will give you a strong background for medical school). Having said that...it's your life. College should be one of the most exciting times of your life, and a time for deciding what you want to be, what career you want for yourself. At most colleges, you don't really specialize in your degree program the first year and half anyway, so you have three semesters to decide what you want to do before you commit. If you decide to be premed, your parents will probably take you seriously if you take yourself seriously, by making the grades that are needed to get into medical school and taking a courseload reflective of that desire. Good luck to you!

Hey, I totally understand where you're at. I studied biology as an undergraduate and ended up in linguistics! I'm definitely a believer that you should try something new if you aren't totally jazzed about what you're studying.

Perhaps your parents laughed it off the first time because they didn't realize that you are serious. Just tell them, and explain how important this is to you. I think most parents are surprisingly understanding, and if they are half-decent parents (which I'm guessing they are) they want you to be happy over anything.
