My Sister didn't want to put chemicals on my niece's head, so the school nurse told her to use a jar of mayonnaise, and wrap with head with clear wrap. Leave on for an hour, and wash with a good grease remover like Dawn, or Wisk. You may have to shampoo a couple of times to get all mayo residue out, BUT, this does kill the lice (smothers them) and makes combing the nits out easier too. Good Luck!!

the poster that said Olive oil is right. My daughter had very thick hair and when she contracted it we went through hell to get rid of it. A school nurse told me to saturate her hair with the oil and put a shower cap securely on her head. Make sure you put a shirt on the childthat you do not mind throwing away because it always ruined my daughters shirts. Anyways leave on all night. The next morning before washing it out comb hair with a nit comb. What the oil does is not only smothers the lice but it swells the hair shaft up and breaks the glue that holds the egg to the hair. when you comb it go over a section four or five times just to make sure. Wash out with dawn dish detergent (it will take a couple of times) and comb through the hair again with the nit comb. wash all bedding in hot water, as well as any stuffed animals or any plush toys. If you have cushions for your couch that you can take off the cover wash them as well but make sure you buy some spray to kill any that may be on furniture. It is very aggrivating but very nessicary. Also if you have carpets get a steam cleaner and clean carpets. I recommend you wash your childs hair in the same manner two weeks later to make sure nothing else is there. I followed these directions 4 and a half years ago and it worked. I actually have had to do this again last month when a child that stayed the night had it and gave it to her again. I actually believe that this is a right of passage for children.

Just a tip too. If your child is a girl then by keeping your daughters hair in braids will limit exposure and make it difficult for her to get this again.

Good luck and if you have any questions you can email me at lvb524@verizon.net

Be sure to change all bedding every night. Wash all bedding and clothing in hot water and dry on a hot heat in dryer. Boil some water on the stove and add to wash to make at least 150 degrees.

Do not use fabric softener.

For items that canot be washed, seal them in a plastic bag for 2 weeks. Then dry them on a high dryer heat for at least 30 minutes.

As for the lice, get some shampoo that contains LINDANE. It is by perscriptions only.

Get an over the counter shampoo (like Rid) and use it on subsequent days. You may also want to try Denorex with 2% coal-tar. It will help kill them.

You must comb out the nits (lice eggs). They are at the bottom of the hair shaft and look like a tiny tiny white egg. Pick them out and make sure they get washed down the drain! (Now you know where the term nit-picking comes from).

You can use the comb that comes with Rid, but a fine flea comb for a dog works better. It will take about a week of constant battle for you to get ahead of the lice.

If the LINDANE and RID do not work, try Vasaline for 4 straight days. The goal is to kill and suffocate them. To get the Vasalene out of the childs hair, use Suave Brand Daily Clarifying Shampoo. It cuts anything!!!

But please be sure to change clothes and bedding because the eggs fall off and hatch and will latch on given an opportunity.

Be vigilant! Work hard! And they will DIE!!!!

Good luck!!

You could try the over the counter treatments. Mayo works well. You could also use vinegar. After you need to run a fine tooth comb through the hair just to remove them.

Also you need to be treating your house. Clean all bedding, clothing, towels. They have sprays that you can use on the carpets and furniture. If you don't treat your house than your child can continue to get them. Also if you have a boy just buzz his head. The less hair he has the less the lice can grab on.

Buy some Rid. Aside from that, nope. Not even shaving their head will do it, by the way. I know some people do that, but the lice are so tiny that they just stick to the tiny little stubs of hair and it doesn't kill the eggs. You HAVE to kill them to get rid of them.

You are pretty much stuck with them until they leave primary school for highschool! But while they there, use different shampoos at every out break that way the lice do not become accoustomed to the shampoo

you can try mayonaise(miracle whip or dukes), you can try beer rinse, eggs, theres all sorts of otc lice shampoo if going to a doctor is an option then go. also keep all furniture with fabric, clothes, towels, bed coverings even curtains and carpets. they do jump. if none of this works then cut her hair.
