I was abusing marijuana for a period of about 6 months very heavily and I noticed after the six months that I became extremely depressed to point of feeling suicidal. I also was experiencing a lot of anxiety and panic attacks which I never had before and my personality had dulled. I just didn't feel like the same person anymore. I was no longer witty and funny like I was before, I was now very quiet and had a hard time thinking. My mind felt blank everyday. Its been about 4 months that I am now sober and my cognitive abilities are better now but I still notice that my memory isn't as great and my personality hasn't fully recovered and I tend to worry about if it ever will? I have already seeked medical help but the doctor's have had very limited knowledge in the subject of marijuana and were not very helpful. Has anyone had a similiar experience and does anyone know how much longer it will take for my full recovery?

It all depends on the person. Six months isn't that long to use it, but you may have effects forever. That's OK, though - you can improve. It's only been four months since you used. Give it time. In fact, while you may suffer from some effects for the rest of your life, if you work to overcome them, you may be better than ever someday!

Just stay away from the stuff - get 12-step help if you need to. Also counseling and perhaps medication would help. See a professional.

I am no expert. But I did study psychotripic chemicals in college. And I know this much: THC and other cannaboids in marijauna excite the brain's production of serotonin.

Anti-depressants (Prozac, etc.) also effect serotonin. Typically, it takes several weeks of use before these prescription anti-depressants have an effect.

And, surely, the chemicals in these medications are weaker than heavy and continuous marijauna use.

You have probably effected the way serotonin is released in your brain. It will probably take time for those neural pathways to fully recover.

If I were you, I would consult a physician.

Try talking to a professional about depression. Seems like you might have developed the depression and smoked the pot to deal with the pain. Now the pot is gone so the underlying depression is still there.

You should do fine if you concentrate on work and your close relationships and stay away from all intoxicants.
