Not sure where you are in NJ but there is the popcorn zoo in egg harbor (south Jersey).. the aquarium in Pt.Pleasant Beach (central jersey) and there is the Patterson falls in Patterson NJ (norht jersey) Plus there is always the beach and parks.
Some IHOP's have character night (bob the builder, Dora etc.)on Fridays and kids eat free.

Many newspapers have a section of the paper, typically on a Friday, which detail events going on around town. There might be a performance at the local library (kids love libraries, I take mine there all the time), there can be a dog or cat show. Over the winter we took the kids to a cat show and they really enjoyed themselves. Of course, there are always arts and craft fairs, flea markets, high school sports. The list goes on. What makes these events fun is that you do them as a family. If you make a day of it, packing lunch, asking the kids to write about it in their journals, or bringing a friend, they will enjoy themselves. Not everyone has to waste a boatload of money going to Disney World. If you dig enough, have a particular interest, or save a little money each week for a small excursion, you can do many fun things with the family. One more thing, the Cape May Zoo is a great trip, and it's cheap, too.

Go to the boardwalk to see the fireworks, ocean county park, allaire state park, the aquarium on the Point Pleasant Boardwalk. There are a lot of things to do in NJ, it is best to check the local newspaper for things going on, I know they have a lot of fairs, festivals and shows that come through, all of which would be listed in the paper.
