why, if you cut the ends off, do the tips grow back white again? I'm mystified by this because your fingernails grow in from the base, not the top. So, what causes the tip to get white again once you've cut it off?

The nail bed is fed blood which keeps your finger nails growing. The part you cut off is dead after it passes the nail bed.

I would imagine that fingernails are actually the same color throughout. The tips only look white in comparison to the pink color of the base, which is probably caused by the nail being adhered to the skin of your finger.

Don't be mystified. Your nails are the same color all the way through. The tip doesn't have the pink colored fleshy background as the rest of the nail...obviously

Actually, there are a couple reasons but the simplest answer is that our fingernails are made of a chemical protein call keratin which is mostly white.

mine seem to never get to this point..since I nibble on them....

I am thinking it might have something to do with the air....and them being at the tips...but then again..you may notice that you have a little white at teh base of them too..in the middle..in a circular formation...

I know that the doctor can tell a lot about your health by looking at your nails..ie. my nails have stripes in them..lines..because I am dehydrated...hmmm

what does your nails look like?
