Above answerer had the right person- Paul Ehlich, but wrong date- it was done in 1883, not 1880. Ehrlich wasnt a professor until 1882, and you need that kind of credential to decide that you want to stick a trochar into a patients belly just because you want to look at a piece of his liver. Incidentally, it was the same year he was married. Coincidence?


Ehrlich discovered, among other things, the cause of syphilis and its first treatment. He smoked 25 cigars a day, and he coined the phrase, "magic bullets" in reference to antibiotics. He won the nobel prize in medicine for his contributions to immunology.

Percutaneous liver biopsy, a technique first accredited to Paul Ehrlich over 100 years ago, is still considered an essential component in the management of most liver diseases. However, the revolution in imaging techniques and development of serological investigations means that, at least for certain conditions, biopsy may no longer be necessary.
