I have heard of dogs doing it but my cat started to do it this past week. He has plently of clean water to drink so why drink toilet water? He never did this before. Has your cat ever done this?

Well because they see there's water there. They do not know it is a toilet they are drinking it from. :)

My cat seems to like water with a little flavor to it. I've seen him pick up dry food with his paw and put it into his water bowl. This is gross, but maybe the toilet water has some "flavor"? Also, maybe the toilet water is cooler than the water in his small little bowl?

My mom's cat used to do that. To a cat (or dog) water is water...they don't care where it comes from. I've seen cats drinking gutter water before!
Just put the seat down and he'll be forced to drink from his bowl.

yes. thirsty. water. thirsty. yes. There is the complete thought process of a cat going to drink out of a toilet bowl. and a very high IQ cat at that!

When you are thirsty do you go get some water that has been sitting out for 2-8 hours? No, you go get some FRESH water. That is what they want. My two kittens just got fixed, and they ALWAYS want new/fresh water. I hear them meow and go get them new water. About 20 minutes later the other one will meow and I will show him/her where the water is they will look at me like I am crazy, I will get new water and they will go drink it and stop meowing.

the water is really fresh and the porcelain keeps it colder then their plastic water bowl. my cat does the same - forces me to keep the lid down... but she also loves to jump into the bathtub when I'm done and drink the warm water drops there
is it their equivalent of going out for a beer? drink something different?

Animals drink out of the toilet because they are lacking minerals or substances in their body or diet.

Our clinic cats do this and I dont kno why. We let them b/c they like it but make sure that you dont leave any cleaner in the bowl so it doesnt contaminate the water.

my cat will drink any old nasty puddle of water than drink her clean fresh water we give her.

They will drink out of anyplace that has water in it. Test this out...put water in boot, in a cup, anywhere...
