Not by car, not by bus, and not by train. What are you going to do – fly? Get on the case of your local officials and tell them to build better transit. Rail is the fastest, most reliable way to get to work that bypasses the existing clogged traffic grid, but it requires significant public investment. The lack of adequate public transportation is precisely the reason Los Angeles is suffering from so much traffic. California's got great weather, great natural resources and a booming economy, but if it's going to last it's up to frustrated drivers like you to demand better alternatives from your local politicians.
P.S. Pasadena is on Metro's Gold Line, so you're not completely out of alternatives. Check out the Web site below. Even if it takes longer to use public transit, at least you'll have time to relax, read the paper, listen to music, whatever, instead of stressing out about the car in front of you.

For me public transport in Los Angeles is not bad. The problem is that is not useful for all trips. And which one is a better way than by bus or train? By car on congested roads? The solution is to move PEOPLE and not vehicles.

It depends on what time you do your commute and what roads you do it on. I drive from Fullerton to Irvine. If I leave in time to get in at 6:30, it takes me 35 minutes to drive 23 miles, but if I go in at 7:30, it takes me closer to an hour. Coming home at 5:00, if I take the freeway, I get home in 90 minutes. If I take a slightly longer route on back roads and streets, I get home in under an hour, usually 50-55 minutes. So I have chosen to go in early, take the overtime pay, and take the back roads home. For me public transportation is not an option anyway, because the train station is about 3 miles from my office and there's no connecting shuttle or bus. My take is this: Avoid traffic, don't fight it. You can't win.

i live in the chicago area, and traffic bites here, as well....especially in the suburbs. (our infrastructure is WAY antiquated) even our great cta/rta is getting bogged down, more and more people rely on public transport. why have so many people gone to california? weather and income, baby! (spend a winter or two in the windy city, or even a summer or two, you'd get the picture) push for more public transportation, a nice train or monorail system appears to be over due! good luck!

Welcome to the real world! Try living in England (UK, south of the border with Scotland).
People go to California because they know they are still better off there than almost everywhere else on the planet!
