Y'know, I've always wondered that too. I have four cats (and a kid) and my house doesn't smell at all. And that's not just me, I've received compliments from friends and family that come over. I just keep it clean--vacuum frequently, bathe my animals once or twice a month (or more often if they need it), and I scoop the litterboxes (all four of them) every day.
I honestly think that people just don't keep the place clean. In fact I laugh at all these deodorizers and scented plug-in things and all that crap. No amount of perfume is going to help a dirty house. If your house smells, clean it!
I've seen people that only changed their sheets once a month, didn't change their trash till it overflowed, didn't clean up after their pets (like letting the litterbox get completely full of poop and pee and then beating the poor cat because it started to go under the bed).
Frankly, some people are just nasty. I think the animals are cleaner.

Houses, where pets are, smell wicked sometimes because pets cannot flush a toilet, or empty their own litterboxes. Dander and pet hair do not smell though.

I have six indoor cats in my house.....and I do smell it when I come home, and one of the first things I do is clean their litterboxes.

Yes, sometimes the house smells like kitty, but I get it cleaned up.

To me, the love I feel for my cats is worth a bit of temporary nose pollution

Unless you keep on top of things, it is really easy for your house to smell, if you have animals of any kind.

If you don't clean litterboxes, or wash dogs, or even clean aquariums, it's easy for your home to smell bad. But, as someone mentioned, if you don't have pets and don't take out trash or dirty diapers that can smell as bad as having a pet if not worse.

Something, that I have read often is that Liz Taylor used to always have lots of pets, dogs mainly I think. Everyone said that her house always smelled bad. Wouldn't you think with all her money that she could hire someone to keep her animals and house clean? So, the second question you asked, I think some people get used to smell.

Why do alot of people who have kids not notice how disgusting thier house smells? dirty diapers, rotten food, nasty children smell, dead skin cells, body odor, poop and pee smell because the kids go in thier pants, greasy hair smell from the kids that dont want to bathe......Now do you realize how stupid your question really is? anybody can have a stinky house if they dont clean it it doesnt matter if you have pets or not.... I know people who have houses that are disgusting that I wouldnt even let a mouse live in and they do it all by themselves without the help of any pets.

Well first of all you have to give your pets baths just like a human. If you dont bathe then you will stink. Also cleaning up after your pet will keep smell away. It all comes back to keeping pets clean and your house clean.

I have a cat and it doesn't smell to bad. They need to let their pets go outside or potty train them. But I think it would be better for them to go outside if the owners are lazy.

Because they are not cleaning as regulary as they should. I guess I am obssesive because I dust and wipe down my floors everyday to keep the smell away. Also cleaning a cat's everyday helps to. I am not used to smell because I don't have any (per all my visitors who say "I didn't know you have cats?)

Not all pet owners just the "bad" pet owners because they are too stupid and lazy to train their dogs to crap and piss outside instead of in the house
