Enzymatic cleaners probably work the best. Wal-Mart even carries a few.

Other than that....

First blot spot dry with white paper towels. Then rinse area with plain ammonia. Blot again. 2nd rinse area with white vinegar and blot again to dry.

You can mix your ammonia & vinegar with water to dilute, but for cats I'd probably leave it strong. Try not to saturate the carpet too much as it will only seep below. For older stains, you may need to repeat. You can replace the pad under the carpet and also treat the concrete or sub-floor below if needed.

I have 5 dogs, 3 cats, 2 guinea pigs right now, so I have a full size carpet cleaner & a small spot remover.

I would not use regular bleach, but you can use color-safe bleach to get rid of other spots & stains.

Good Luck.

Vinegar, water and baking soda. The baking soda gets rid of it and the vinegar gets rid of the oder. But delute it with water then rinse the carpet really well afterwards.

Take scissors and cut out the affected area and place a throw rug over the hole. I don't know of anything that can truly get rid of that smell!

you can try the vinager how ever you will never get rid of it completely..it will resurface..(from under the carpet pad and the back) so you should remove it.
