People thought it was scary because it had a lot of implied gore in it as well as some gross scenes. Some people got physically sick when they saw it in the movie theater. As far as affecting people's mental health goes, I think it was mostly just disturbing to some people but not enough to require therapy. The movie was a big deal to a number of people in the Catholic church because they had issues on the subject of exorcism.

Mamma Cass died of heart failure. She did not choke on a ham sandwich:
"An urban legend holds that Elliot died choking on a ham sandwich. This is patently incorrect. Shortly after her death, but before her autopsy, The Times published an article that quoted her doctor as speculating that she "probably … died as a result of choking on a sandwich while lying in bed". However, later that week the coroner found no food in her trachea and determined that the cause of death was heart failure." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cass_Elliot

The Exorcist was hilarious!!! But maybe not so hilarious to people who buy into all the religious symbolism?

I hate it when I find out I have been believing an urban legend since childhood. Wow, and that was the story my mom told me to keep me from eating in bed. Well I still love the song 'Dream a Litlle Dream of Me.' Such a pretty voice...bummer about the heart failure. That's even sadder than the other!

Did you see the movie The Exorcist? It was about the Catholic Church and was not made a movie by Christians. It was made by people who are amused by the thought that people can be bothered by a daemon. So they made it as full of vomit and outrageous actions as they could imagine. They showed the little girl have her head turned all the way around and back, which is not possible and has never happened to anyone. They show the little girl chopping away at her body with a large metal cross with cursing of God. The cursing happens a lot, since the evil spririt will argue and refuse to come out sometime and I heard that one time a girl was thrown to the floor and she bit herself. But after that the spirit of anger came out and she was much more peaceful after that. You must continue to pray so the spirit cannot come back. I heard of expelling 69 evil spirits from one person but it took a few days. It is very scary to think there are evil spirits who can enter our bodies when we are weak and just stay there to make our life torment because they do hate us and want us to die before we accept Jesus and become able to expell them. We are simple creatures and they are spiritual beings who do not die. They know they will all end up in Hell when Jesus comes back and they hate us for it. We need a spiritual protector and we have one. Jesus. Accept Him as your Lord and savior and He will show you how to be rid of all evil. The Exorcist cracks me up. I put it on sometimes when I am having panic attacks because it is so ridiculous and I love Pazuzu. Masturbating with a crucifix? Really, that's priceless.

The exorcist wasn't scary...and it was just a movie. If people were mentally affected by it they shouldn't be seeing horror movies.
