Its unlikely that obesity will ever be ended, however, it would likely decrease if (1) soda machines were taken out of all schools, (2) fast food operations were removed from all schools. The thing is, while obesity should be something that every individual controls themselves, the flooding of the market with refined sugar products coincides with the increase in the North American continents obesity crisis. Also, if you will look at a map of the incidence of obesity, especially in the US, you will find it is higher in the South. Why? Because cheap, starch laden foods are the diet of the poor, and the South is historically poorer. The "health food" market is a gourmet market and until demand forces the market to change the pricing and availability of healthier foods, poorer people will still buy the cheaper, filling, and carb laden foods. The other really big culprit is recreational electronics: Playstation, TV, DVD players, etc. Kids used to spend most of their evening after school outside playing until dark, now they sit in their homes, glued to TV, video games, etc. These combined factors have exponentially increased obesity and until those fundamental changes are made, obesity levels will continue to rise.

I have heard horror stories of people waiting long periods for treatment. Most come from larger cities. When I lived in Canada, I never had a problem seeing my doctor. Except for being free, the procedure was nearly the same as here in the U.S.A. --- Make an appointment (usually for 2 or 3 days in advance) and go at the specified time. I never had surgery, but I agree that the Canadian system is much better.

Get rid of fast food! Teach kids how to maintain a healthy diet and exercise, and actually apply that knowledge to their lives. Also getting people involved in outside or community activities would make a difference.

Get rid of electricity. Okay, maybe not all of it. Make people have a bike they have to ride to generate energy to power their tv sets, computers, video games.
Get rid of personal transport and get more public transportation within the cities so people will have to walk.
Get rid of suburbia so we don't have to drive everywhere to get what we need or go to work.
Get more healthy incentives at schools and employers.
