Woodpeckers have a lot of cushioning to protect not only their head from hurting, but their brain from getting damaged every time they bang their heads.

woodpeckers have a neck muscle and layer of fluid at the back of their head that cusions their head as they peck through the wood looking for bugs. and the shape of their beak and the front of their head allows the blow to be sent back in to the tree.
