Astronauts are going to have to recycle their Urine on long trips like to mars. There is a special machine that does this. It's perfectly safe. On another issue about ocean water. I think there is a saline plant down in Florida that filters out all the salt in the water. The water still taste funny, but it's good. Eventually that's going to be the way to conserve water more in the future. Water is constantly tested for impurities , before it gets to the public. The people of New Orleans, La have it really bad . They pumped all that bad water out of the city into Lake Ponchatrane. Lots of it. OOOOO nasty.

This may depend in what country you're living in. I'm assuming you live in the united states. Depending on what you mean by filtered water, there are various methods of getting and cleansing it.

http://www.nrdc.org/water/drinking/nbw.asp has some detailed information from a four year study on bottled water that you may find useful.

Since that study, the question has been asked, "Ok, so bottled water isn't necessarily safe, and neither is tap, what do I drink?"

http://www.nrdc.org/water/drinking/qtap.asp answers that question.

Especially of note is their fifth point.

". I've heard that the Bush administration is proposing to limit the scope of the Clean Water Act. How could that affect my drinking water?

Early in 2003, the Bush administration initiated a process to rewrite Clean Water Act rules and narrow the scope of the law. If the administration succumbs to pressure from industrial polluters, thousands of streams, wetlands and other waters that filter pollution out of drinking water sources would no longer be protected by the law, allowing industry to dredge, fill or dump waste into them. Unregulated contamination from sewage, oil, hazardous chemicals and other pollution would be disastrous for our drinking water supplies and public health. Children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems would be especially at risk from exposure to unsafe, contaminated drinking water. (See NRDC's March 2003 press release for more information.) "

There's nothing I've seen that indicates human waste could be directly pumped into your water in the Untied States. Since most water comes from udnerground, it may reach your water soruces eventually, but that's what fitlering stations are for. As shown, they're not as effective as they could be, but you're not drinking out of the toilet, so to speak.

Edit: Last note, if this were a huge problem for most US areas, there wouldn't be a Mythbusters show concerning the idea of feacal coliform getting onto your toothbrush after you flush.

hey, thats what the world is coming to, and you can't stop drinking water because you need it to survive...at least it has been filtered. someone told me that we are the only species alive to drink the milk from another species....how gross is that? but a cool way to think of things is that since the hydrologic cycle is a cycle the rain that is coming down today could have been the same rain that was coming down on the dinosaurs millions of years ago...feces and all! science is fun!, but i do agree it is a little disgusting when you think about it too much! :)

Don't worry. The water you drink goes through extensive treatment and filtration processes before it comes out your tap. Solids are settled out, chlorine or other processes are used to kill bacteria, and filtration is used to get rid of anything else that has made it that far.
If it's not safe by the time it reaches you than the supplier will be in mucho trouble from the feds...and believe me, they don't want that. Not to mention that many higher ups will lose their jobs, and BELIEVE ME, they do not want that!

It depemnds where you get your water from. If it's from a well, probably not recycled water. If it comes from a river it most likely is recycled water thats been cleaned up with some chlorine added. yum yum
