That depends on what you're expecting it to do. In most respects, yes, the Element is a great car. If you've ever driven a CR-V or Civic, you'll find that the driving experience is not that dissimilar. The Accord-sourced engine is not all that powerful, but has enough torque to feel brisk in everyday driving. The dash-mounted manual shifter is nice and solid. Handling isn't exactly agile, but is certainly carlike--the Element doesn't feel even a little bit trucky. The only dynamic drawback is a stiffish ride.

From the driver's seat, the view out resembles that of a Scion xB or Hummer H2--there's a certain "tunnel vision" effect as you gaze through the upright, faraway windshield. Some people like that, other's dont.

The upside of the Element's interior is that it's easy to clean (water-resistant seats, rubberized floor), easy to load, thanks to the clamshell side doors, has lots of storage space, and is very roomy for four.

The downside is that it will *only* seat four. There is no center position in the rear seat. Also, despite the huge trunk, the Element's maximum load is just 860 pounds. You could realistically max it out with four large occupants, so this vehicle is a poor choice if you plan to carry people in conjunction with big, heavy loads.

In other practical aspects, well, it's a Honda. That means decent gas mileage, low depreciation, a strong reliability record, and--unfortunately--insurance rates that are likely higher than you'd expect (but no worse than, say, the Scion tC). I'm not sure why others have chosen to comment on looks... you can make that decision for yourself simply by looking at it.

I have an element, I love it, the room inside is great, decent gas milege (25 highway) and the insurance is low. Most people think that the grey panels make it look bad, but I got used to them. I highly recommend the car if you are looking for a small SUV that fits a ton of stuff and is good on gas.
