i would avoid downtown la (thats where skid row is), compton, hollywood at night. i know everyone thinks hollywood is about movie stars and that they are walking down the street, well the don't! i have lived in la all my life and have been around. some of the funnest things to do are on the outskirts of la. santa monica is nice. a nice hotel (but relativly expensive somtimes) is hotel casa del mar.

Some areas are better, some worse. But I am really hesitant to smear one particular area, because these things change constantly. If you are of a certain ethnicity, you might do fine in an area that would be problematic for someone else. Generally, the area known and South Central has higher crime, and there are other high crime pockets. You can consult crime maps put out by the Los Angeles Police Department, which I think I would do if I were contemplating moving here. I would suggest before committing to a lease that you rent on a month-to-month basis for a while so you can evaluate your area. Ask people at your job, and drive around different areas. Try to live near your work, as transportation is scanty and commute times are long (and gas so costly). It's expensive, crowded, and often pretentious to live on the West Side or at the beach, so unless you have a lot of money, look inland in areas such as downtown, Glendale, Burbank, Pasadena, or Alhambra, I suggest. There are very nice LA City neighborhoods, too, and some of them rather artsy, such as Los Feliz, Echo Park and Silverlake, Atwater Village, Eagle Rock, Larchmont, Beachwood Canyon, and all through the Hollywood Hills. Please remember that Los Angeles is HUGE, and although there is crime, and, yes, gangs, it is like any large city, and also wonderful.

Upland is next to Pomona and Montclair off the 10 freeway just past Ontario. Upland is pretty nice and safe. Every place has it's bad parts though. Santa Monica is a pretty safe place. You want to stay away from Compton, Watts, Inglewood, Maywood and most parts of Long Beach. In fact, if you are interested and you like to dance - this coming Saturday night at the Arthur Murray Studio in Upland they are going to be having a dance that the public can attend. it starts at 7pm. It's off Mountain Avenue I believe.

avoid downtown Los Angeles...especially after dark. Santa Monica is fine, Upland is fine too, I don't live far from there...just the next town over. All the suburbs are pretty nice and safe. Of course there are bad neighborhoods everywhere...but just keep your eyes open and try not to look like a tourist.

I disagree with the Samba Queen regarding her statement to "avoid most parts of Long Beach." That is ridiculous. There are parts of Long Beach that I would avoid, as with most cities, but there are beautiful areas in Long Beach. You can take a Gondola ride in Naples, and see beautiful waterfront homes in the process, and the area near Cal State Long Beach is pretty quiet. They've recently built beautiful new apartment homes and condos downtown near the newly built Pike, which is just off of the water. The Signal Hill region of Long Beach boasts arguably the best views in the city--you can see the Pacific Ocean to the southwest and the Big Bear mountains to the northeast. Also, the California Heights region of Long Beach is one of the safest neighborhoods in the country.

Downtown Los Angeles
Upland is nice place to live, nice homes but there's nothing to do there.
Shoreline Village in Long Beach is a nice place to eat, drink, look at the ocean see the Queen Mary and The new Pike is great, also go down Pine Avenue off Ocean Blvd to the restaurants, great food and drinks and nice shopping outlets.

Avoid Compton, City of Industry & sometimes Santa Ana. Though I love Santa Ana, I always seem to get harassed by the hommies.

The bad news is that most of the fun places to live like SM and Hollywood have their fare share of crime. OC/Laguna is really safe but boring unless you are married and have kids. If I were you I'd move to Westwood near the UCLA campus because it's relatively cheap and safe, close enough to Hollywood to party, and still close enough the the beach.

Avoid in LA? How about pretty much all of LA? It's crazy there. Skip it and go down to San Diego.
