Mine whistles for me! When she sees me or hears me, she starts whistling as if I am a puppy! lol She wimpers, too. I think Greys are just so smart, they can figure out what it takes to get our attention!
Sounds like it's working for her, too!

How old is she? Young birds that were hand-fed(and most Greys in the country were)make a cooing sound in their throat when they think that they want to be fed or they want the same type of attention that they get when they were being fed.
Greys are so smart. They start talking really early, too. They will copy sounds like microwave beeps, door squeaks, refrigerator motors and other sounds that you were not even aware of. I was just feeding my Amazon and he makes the sound of his food pellets being poured into his dish every time I feed him.
My Grey knows so many sounds and words, that I really can't tell you if he has any "natural" calls. My Amazons and Blue and Golds do, but I'm not aware of any with my Grey.
One of my Macaws does make a cooing sound when she is not feeling well. Mostly, you have to watch for signs of ruffled feathers and things like the bird holding one foot up. They do that to try to keep warm when they are trying to fight off illness. Never keep a bird in a drafty place. Most all birds like to have the cage covered at night.
Birds are really tough. I've owned many and I've never lost one to illness. If they do look sick, you need to get them to the vet rather quickly since they will not show signs of illness until they are very sick.
Your's is most likely just making a new noise that you did not realize it knew. Hope everything goes well for you both.

Your grey could just be lonely. Greys love to mimic and yours may have heard the sound days or months ago - say from the television. Mine has been known to say a new word and then "put it away" for a couple of years before we hear it again. My suggestion is to check the feces in the cage for the right color and consistancy and watch the bird for irregular behavior. If your pet is not eating or acting right then take her to the vet. However, the fact the sound occurs more when your in the room probably means the bird is getting attention when doing it. Good Luck.

My aunt's grey will mimic pretty much any sound she hears....including the phone ringing, the doorbell, the microwave, one side of a telephone conversation, and ridiculous little bits from soap operas or TV commercials. If your grey heard someone crying (even on TV or the radio!) then it can mimic that sound. And anything that gets her attention, (good or bad attention) she'll keep on repeating....for example, if your kid giggles every time there's a fart or a burp, your bird will definitely do a lot of both noises!

I had an african grey that would make a clicking, whoooing sound every night as the sun went down. It was actually very soothing.
Another grey we had made a sound like a school bus' brakes too.

African Greys are really great birds they can make many sounds. in fact they immitate what they listen, and you may never know from where it picked the sound it is making. and you do not need to worry, if she looks good then its fine.

I understand your loss :( i replaced into somewhat heartbroken whilst my 2 budgies died (and that i can in basic terms think of what that is desire to lose a greater parrot- they are usually greater human-like then the little adult adult males are)... I only regarded over at my Conure and a prickle progressed in my nostril- i could die, only die, if something occurred to him... or any of my pets. My canine is like my baby greater-so then my poultry. the only component i can advise is, take the approperiate time for grieving. everyone who has lost a enjoyed kinfolk puppy would be conscious of precisely what you're dealing with. Cry, Vent, bake your self a cake, bake your self 20 muffins in case you're able to desire to... once you sense as much because it, perhaps you adult adult males ought to placed money right into a youthful person African gray lower back? i think of the Congos are somewhat alluring little critters- My previous babysitter had an fairly good-looking individual who enjoyed to speak to me :) Getting a clean poultry provide you adult adult males some new life to paintings with from sq. one, and that i think of your previous birds could savor your husband and you being happy lower back.

she may just be mimicing a sound she has heard. the question is, how's her behavior OTHER than this? is her appetite normal? is there ANYTHING else about her behavior that is different? if not, i wouldn't worry about it. but if there are other signs of different behavior, take her to an avian vet to have her checked out
