while i agree with the first answer, i must disagree -- i don't find little kids tasty at all.

I believe a tot means small and tater is for potato. And not how Vice President Gore spelled it potatoe ha ha

i think a tot is a little kid.
I see signs about "Tot Town" as day care centers
so maybe a tater tot is a little tater.

It means little. A litte kid is sometimes called a tot. So little potatoes are "tater tots". I think they are very tasty.
