I have a 7 week puppy and a year old cat. My cat constantly hisses at my dog, and almost scratched his eye out. What can I do for the cat to like the puppy? How long will it take?

allow your cat the space he needs. don't force him to like the dog. in time he will "adjust" to the idea.
here is a link with some good advise!

Don't worry. They may never get to the point of the cat liking the dog but they will adjust and just ignore or tolerate eachother. My cat hates my dog and they just ignore eachother. Every once in a while I catch my cat rubbing it's head on the dogs furry tail when the dog is sleeping. It's almost funny to see when you know the cat hates the dog and will only do this when the dog is unaware of it.

That could take a while. If you make sure to give the cat extra attention, that will help.

Now, my mother's beagle was practically raised by the cats- and if he got too rambunctious they would thwap him. They never really hurt him, though once when he didn't take the hint Harry (the Queen cat) did remind him that she still had her claws.

Try not to interfere unless you see a real danger to the puppy. The cat's simply feeling a need to reinforce his position in the hierarchy.

Good luck!

Just let them be. If it gets to be where the cat is hurting the puppy, try putting the puppy in a crate in the middle of the living room and just let the cat get used to the puppy by smelling her and realizing that the puppy is not going to hurt her. they should gradually learn to like eachother if they are living in the same house.

I just let my cat and dog duke it out. They don't hurt each other, my dog just stands there and the cat hisses and bats at him (he is declawed) so it doesn't hurt. You could also use positive reinforcement. Whenever the dog walks by the cat and he doesn't hiss, praise the cat. Since they are both young they will eventually just learn to live with each other.

Your cat may never be happy about the new pup, but animals DO adjust. It may take 2 weeks up to a few months. As for now just do not allow the cat near your new pup, unless you are sitting RIGHT there
