That's really a difficult question. You get to know them VERY slowly, be careful what you share with them at first until you feel they are "safe", and even then, be selective any personal information you share and what you say online. IF you decide to meet the person, do it in a public place, DURING DAYLIGHT, and only for coffee, lunch or something like that. Once you meet them, you will know if they are "normal" and if they like you. Above all, PLEASE be careful!

There is no way to know this. The internet is full of nameless, faceless individuals. You get to know the identity that they WANT you to know. If we could all do that in reality this world would be perfect wouldn't it? Since it's not be safe, have fun online, never take it too seriously. Keep your relationships out in the real. If you are taking the risk of meeting someone then take some TRUSTED friends along.

U can't.
Online people are fake. You shouldn't chat with people online unless u know them & person. For all you know, somebody who u think is a cute 16 year old girl who lives in arizona could be a 60 year old man living in China!
You just never know

In all truth and honesty I do not know. Since that person is not physically there with you, it is impossible for you to pick up on nonverbal signals that a person gives. The only thing that you can do in an on-line relationship is to take that person at there word and trust them, but cautiously.

You never really know. The same as with someone that is there with you. It's all about taking chances on the unknown. The only thing is that you can take them at their word.

well, it's not that easy because online u can carefully type and hide ur feelings but if the person really likes u they'll tell u. there's really no other way to tell.

people's on-line persona could be radically different from the real-life person. and the way they're interpreting you could be totally different from the way you intend to present yourself. there are some things best not done on a computer, and meeting people is one of them.

Well I agree with Jill, just take it slow. Dont trust them just because. And you will know if they really like you, just pay attention.
And lmao Anonymous.
