Abs don't stop you from getting "knocked around".

No. I wish, it'd be so much easier. You need to do some sort of weight training about 3 times a week--weight lifting, as you prolly know, causes muscle mass to increase. The more muscle you have, the more fat it burns....you cannot burn fat solely by cardio workouts. Cardio is important--don't stop running--but add in some weight training and that will help you along the way.
Crunches/ab-work is very fine and dandy, but you cannot "spot" lose fat. Crunches and ab work is very good, don't get me wrong. HOwever, everyone's body works differently--maybe you *will* lose fat on your stomach first, who knows--but by solely doing crunches, you will NOT get abs. But when you start working out (cardio and weight training), you may lose fat from other areas before it gets to your stomach....be patient. But maybe you're one of the lucky ones whose body loses it on the belly first :P.
Good luck, and give it time....abs are also genetic, so don't be disappointed if, no matter what you do, you can't get them to look like a "six pack." However, you don't need a six pack to have good, strong abs for football/soccer--the muscle will always be there!!!

Most of the time - no. However, some people do have great genetics. If you do some abdominal work and you run, and get very lean, your abs will show.
I would recommended doing some resistance training, as well. Anywhere on your body that you add muscle will increase your metabolism ( the more muscle you have, the more fat you burn), so you will be leaner and maybe you will see those abs quicker!!

you get rid of a beer belly by running. for abs you really need to stop eating bread.

running can help you start to see your six pack; however, you'll need to do sit-ups or crunches to build up your abs.

If you run enough.
However, no-one can outrun their knife and fork. If you eat heroically, nothing will burn fat fast enough to show the sexy six-pack.
