Well I have a JVC camcorder, and if you use the manual setting on mine, you have an opition of putting it to widescreen mode. I don't know if it really does do that, but it appears to do it. Also, you can buy a camcorder that records in wide screen. But I am assuming that you already have your camcorder, so that won't help you now, but maybe down the road? Hope this helps.

Movies made professionally (like the Hollywood stuff you see in theaters) is actually recorded in a widescreen format and THEN degraded to letterbox "to fit our screen". Haven't you ever seen that disclaimer in the beginning of a movie that says that this movie has been modified to fit your TV.
And that's right people, widescreen is actually better than letterbox. Widescreen contains more of the picture and then the picture is chopped off (from left and right) to fit your TV. Usually people think that widescreen picture is chopped off (from the top and the bottom).
It should have been recorded so otherwise it will look distorted and everyone will look fatter than they really are.
Otherwise, Adobe Premier is pretty awesome. Adobe Premier will do it but Premier is retailing at $850 right now. I don't know how badly you want to widescreen your home movie. And just to let you know, there is no advantage in doing so. It won't make it "better quality" or something.
