I signed a contract with them when I moved into aneighborhood that was being built. Since then 3 police have moved into our houseing complex and we no longer need a security system but they insist that we continue paying for 3 years. Is this fair? We paid for a year and have discontinued our service but the continue to extort cash out of our checking account.

I'm afraid you're stuck. This is a common practice, like cell phone contracts. If you sign for 3 years (or however long) the cell phone is free.

Sounds like ADT does this, too. What did you pay for the install? It was probably fairly cheap, like the free phone. To make it worthwhile to do the install of the alarm system for a cheap price, or even free, they need a 3 year contract.

From their end, it is probably necessary. If the customers had to pay, oh, say around $1000.00 for the install, most would probably not sign up.
