we've had my rescued springer for 2 weeks since then she has had diarrhoea, around 4 times a day. shes been to the vets, they gave her some prebiotics and some chicken and rice food they sell. shes been on that a week now and shes still no better. shes also for the last week been on worming powders (for lung worm apparantly) which i dont think are helping the diarrhoea but the vet said to keep taking them. has anyone any ideas. i dont know if i should stick with the food the vets gave me at £1.20 a tin and hope it starts to clear up after the wormers have finished (tommorow). Can anyone reccommend a particular brand or diet which will help, ive heard that a completly dry food diet can help. she seems her usual self wants to go out but the vets have said she need to rest. she's also very skinny. any ideas please?

Mix in some rice with her food to help ease the diarrhea. Look for a food that does NOT have "by products" in the ingredients list or you'll be paying a lot of money for garbage. Personally, I like Nutro, but I don't know if you can get it there - it has no by products and is reasonably priced and my dogs have done fine on it for more than 10 years. They make canned and dry dog foods for puppies and adults. Any changes in diet should be made slowly to avoid diarrhea - gradually mix more new food in with what you've been using until he's switched over.

Some dogs are allergic to wheat - like people with Celiac's disease. Try a food that has no wheat, gluten or oats in it.

my vet always tells me to give them boiled chicken and plain boiled rice after they have had the runs, but i would get her back to the vet and if you're not happy with the vet you have at the moment get another one . no harm in getting a second opinion!. if you want a dry food you could try "pets at home" own brand it has no preservative or artifical colours in it and only the chicken breast is used ,although my dog had a different problem it cleared up because it had better ingredients. Maybe your vet can do more tests ( if he has'nt already ) and try to get it sorted out once and for all ! I think the problem is going on too long . the poor dog must be getting dehydrated unless he gave you something to stop that ( my vet always does that and it's not expensive ) please get your dog back to a vet as soon as possible!! i really wish you and your springer good luck .bye for now...............

My golden retriever has the same problem, but was a lot worse when he was a pup. As he's got older, he is 4 on October, he has improved. The vet gave us Hills Science plan tinned dog food, when he was a pup, which he absolutely loved, but the price for one tin, there's no way we could keep that up. We then gave him dried Eukaneama which was fine for a start but still gave him some problems, now he is on canned winnalot with mixer which is fine with his stomach, I think alot of it is trial and error. We also give him cooked chicken with the skin taken off of it for a treat. I've given him cooked beef bones which goes straight through him. Theres a product called merc viv which you can give to your dog at the start of him having diarrhoea, which does help. We bought it from a training place for dogs called "It's a Dogs Life". She also sold us tree bark which you mix in with his food. Telephone number- 01466 711293. I'm sure she will be able to advise you of something to help your dog.

A friend's springer spaniel had the squirts a few weeks ago. It took an anti biotic to stop it--it killed off the bacteria in the digestive tract and then it calmed down. Before that on the vet's advice we tried a diet of white rice and cottage cheese, which did not help. Good luck!

OK when I got one of my dogs as a pup he was so badly treated and full of worms he was skin and bones. His diarrhoea was like water.

Bland food - boiled chicken, plain rice, scrambled eggs but no milk (although diluted goats milk is great for calcium and putting weight on)

Also a little tiny dose of Pepto bismol - quarter of a teaspoon may reduce the diarrhoea and help her alittle bit but don't do it until after the worming tablets have finished.

Once she has stopped the worming tablets and the bland food (little and often) has settled her tummy start slowly introducing a dry dog food.

Good luck and congratulations on the new member of your family.

starve her for 24 hours then feed her on scrambled egg only which is light on the tummy, try for a few days until better then if no change get another vet because yours doesn't seem to know what hes on about, dry food is better then tinned because tinned is made up from crap basically but dry food is full of vitamins an minerals, if she won't take to dry food try making it with gravy to give it some flavour. hope I've helped.

I have a puppy Springer also; when I brought her home she diarrhea. But, when I fed her Iams Original for puppies. A dry food it went away after several days. I find dry food less messy and good for their teeth. Here in Arizona you can get Iam Original puppy food 4lbs for $7.50. That last about two weeks. I hope you can find it and will try it. It is hard enough to adjust to a new dog without having to worry about diarrhea. Best of everything to you.

As long as you are still following your vets advice, the old fashioned remedy is arrowroot. You get it from the cake and baking section of the supermarket. Mix a teaspoon with some water to a cream and figure out how to get it into her. Dose her every day.
Make sure she always has clean water in this weather.
And have your vet check her for pancreatitis.

You must keep her on the medication for lungworm, its extremely serious.

I give my dog science diet brand and she seems to do good with it. But before you change anything, I think it is time to call the vet since it has been a week and it still has not been better.

it may be wise to buy chicken mince from a super-market and some rice. It is the best way to keep your dog healthy while she is ill. It will help balance her system. Don't get the vet food as they are trying to get more money off you. trust me, chicken and rice works wonders. I feed it to my dogs, and they have never been healthier
