The reasons are many. Our administrations (especially the current one) have people who think that the foreign policy goals of both countries are in sync. They cite reasons such as Israel being a democracy. There's also a well-established Jewish base in this country that reasonably sees Israel as a symbol for identity and survival (especially given the history of anti-semitism and persecution). There are also some strange Christian fundamentalism ties where christian prophecy is tied in with the expansion of Israel's borders -- weird stuff that can be researched on the web (there's evidence that Bush subscribes to some of this stuff).

They are our junkyard dog in the Middle East. They are the military counterbalance to all of the Islamic countries that hate the west. Isreal is an oasis of civilization in a desert of fundmentalist madness. Their military is an extension of our own. They can and will do our dirty-work if and when wars break out in that region. They are also a lghtning rod for Anti-American sentiment from Muslims. The Muslims know that the only reason that Isreal has not already wiped them off the face of the earth is that the U.S. is holding the leash. George Bush has a longer leash than most presidents.

A ton of private money goes to Israel from the US and there are some very powerful Jewish lobbies in this country. Strong lobbies and money always dictate US policy. Why is oil consumption a priority? Why are alternative fuel sources not a priority? Same thing and you already said it, money and lobbies. I think you answered your own question.

the US support of Israel putting down elements that are adamantly against US presence in the middle east only helps consolidate our plans to have presence in the middle east long-term....make no mistake...the US will be in the middle east from now on....it is in our security interest in the minds of our govt....read "rebuilding americas defenses" written by a thinktank located in washington called the PNAC and used by the current administration.
