Los Angeles is a huge city composed of the actual city of LA and all the surrounding suburbs that grew into LA. You cannot generalize. The greater LA metropolitan area is 90 miles across. Boggles the mind, eh?

Crime. Yes like any other major city in the world there is crime. So be alert. Don't go down unlit dark alleys at night. And stay out of South Central, Watts, and Compton.

Otherwise have fun. Downtown LA is a lot of fun. Don't be afraid. It's been cleaned up. The Jewelry district is at 5th and Hope. Broadway is a huge shopping district. Under the office towers are more shops. And the Music Center is there for theatre and Concerts. Third and Grand is the outdoor concert theatre next to the Museum of Contemporary Art. In the summer there's lots to do there and its free. Olvera St is lots of fun to see an orginal sort of shopping street from the birth of LA. Chinatown is great. Little Tokyo is great. The Fashion District at Olympic and Santee is a gas with a whole bazaar like setting called "The Alley". The California Fashion Mart there on Fridays sells off samples. The last Friday of the Month is a huge sample sale. Three giant buildings selling all sorts of apparel and housewares that won't be in the stores for 6 more months.

There are plenty of guidebooks. Use one. The tourist places will be fine. Venture out and around. You will need a car.

Enjoy a wonderful varied city with all the cultures of the world in one giant mega-city.

Get a guide book. Read it. Figure out what you want to see. Just DON"T go see the Watts Towers. DON"T.

LA is a very unsafe place to visit. My daughter from Australia got beaten up last night and robbed of all her possessions (in the central district). No one helped her. The police were not interested and recorded the stolen goods as lost - less paperwork they said. Women are totally unsafe in LA. There are plenty of other places to holiday in the world.

Los Angeles, Calif., like many other populous cities across the United States, can be a wonderful place to live or an extremely dangerous one, depending on the circumstances and your location. Unlike the other mega-cities, though, Los Angeles is a huge spread of disparate, cultural neighborhoods that vary almost block-to-block. Where you feel safe or unsafe is somewhat subjective. That being said, there are a few facts about the safe areas and the areas to avoid in Los Angeles that can somewhat be agreed upon. The safe places in Los Angeles, statistically, are relatively unpopulated areas near the edge of the greater metropolitan area, next to the wide open spaces or the most affluent neighborhoods. The well-known lyric, "nobody walks in L.A.," is as much a consequence of the widespread layout of the city and its lack of convenient public transportation as it is of personal fears for safety combined with a bit of a car addiction.

See a celeb; glass a beverage on a beach bar at sunset; wear a pair of custom sneakers within an ultra-luxurious boutique in Beverly Hills; play at Universal Studios Hollywood concept park, explore world-class museums, or dance the night time out in a starlet-filled club…..this are only someof the things you might find in Los Angeles, learn that city with hotelbye . Los Angeles is the California's liveliest city; may be the activity capital of America, with megastar electricity and unlimited activities. Hollywood may be the most-see attractions in Los Angeles. This place draws millions of guests annually who vacation there to pay respect with their beloved stars and possibly even get a glimpse of several popular personalities. And occasionally they're fortunate!

Don't worry too much, most of the tourist spots are safe. I've lived here all my life and, while I wouldn't drive through Compton without a good reason, the only crimes I've been a victim of have been car-related (having it broken into or stolen - NOT carjacked). And the freeways aren't all bad all the time, just mostly bad most of the time. It's true that you will be safe if you stay west of the 405, but you don't have to. After all, there are some very high income spots east of the 405 (Beverly Hills, Century City, Westwood, Bel Air, etc.)

95% of greater LA is good. And yes, South Central and Compton are the places to avoid. Stay out of the area bounded by the 405, 10 and 710 freeways and you will be fine. You can tell a bad area as you will see many of the houses have bars on the windows.

Stay away from downtown Los Angeles, or at least stay in your car with your doors locked! Stay out of Compton, Watts, Inglewood, and South Central in general. Don't stare at the gang members either - that'll just cause them to have to "pop a cap in yo a$$".

I lived in LA for 7 years - from Compton to Malibu. (7 years too many)... For the most part anything west of Interstate 405 is fine. LA is no worse than other big cities -aside from traffic and smog. enjoy Malibu, Manhattan beach, west Hollywood (Hollywood itself is nothing special).

Avoid the freeway at all costs! It really is a parking lot.
