I thought Iraq was the foothold of democracy in the Middle East? Oh! Why is Israel treated differently?

Israel was created by the United Nations in 1947 to the protest of Middle East nations. Israel was created as a sanctuary for European Jews that were displaced in World War II. Plus, the US and Europe thought it would be a good idea to establish a Middle Eastern ally that was solidly democratic to ward off the evil forces of communism. Our national interest aside, Israel has been fighting to maintain its lands, bestowed upon by International grant, for the last 60 years. Throughout this time frame, they have fought wars against pretty much everyone in the Middle East. Plus, it hasn’t made Islamic nations happy that the US has supplied Israel with a high-tech military arsenal. When a US manufactured apache helicopter flies overhead with an Israeli crest freshly painted on one side, you might start to understand why they might hate America.

But like most international conflicts, the US chose a side to be on when we declared Israel a sovereign nation in 1947. Since they are far more alike us in a political and social sense – and we birthed them through an international agreement - we typically look the other way when Israel goes on its militaristic missions of hostile militant purging. However, if we never got involved creating Israel in the first place, there would be little reason for anyone in the Middle East to hate us, or fly planes into our buildings. Consider all of this post Cold War collateral damage.

Please take note that this is not about supporting democracy in the face of despotism or any other altruistic messages. Even more so, it’s not about fighting terrorism. Israel is a 230 lbs 16-year-old boy on steroids whose parents - the United States – doesn’t quite know how to control. As parents, we just don’t quite know what to do.

Yes of course isreal is the closest thing to a true democracy in the region. Many Jews maintain close ties to those on the USA. Culturally the US and Isreal are much more alike than the Arab countries in the area. The other countries have all harbored or sponsored terrorists.

Here's a thought.

If Israel were to lay down its arms, what would happen? The surrounding nations would take it over, and wipe Israel and it's people off the face of the map. (see link below)

If the "Palestinians," Syrians, Lebanese, Jordanians, Iranians, Saudis, etc., were to lay down their arms, what would happen? Peace.

Israel has never attacked its neighbors except to defend itself. The aggression is always from outside its borders. Beginning with the nation's founding in 1948.

No one asks Hamas, Fatah, or Hezbollah to "use restraint" when they attack Israel, but let Israel try to do something in response, and the whole world, even the Vatican, says, "Be gentle!"

There is a double standard. But it's not for Israel. It is for the terrorists and nations that hate Israel.

The US, for a number of reasons, tolerates a lot more things from Israel, than it does from other countries.

Compare the Gulf of Tonkin incident, with the attack on the USS Liberty by Israel.

Compare US reaction to the Israeli explosion of a Nuclear Device, to US reaction of either North Korea, or an Arab country working on building a nuclear device.

Most of the support for Israel comes from Conservative, Fundamental Evangelical Protestant Christians. The influence of Jews, both for votes, and money, simply adds to the reasons to vote pro-Isreal.

Yes because the US is in bed with them, more or less. Don't expect fair treatment from a country with a history such as the US.
