That depends. On what you want in a pet bird. According to BIRDTALK magazine there are over 400 species of birds in just the United States to available as pets to the general public.

Do you want the bird to be loud or quiet?
talkative or not?
colorful or not?
independant or attention grabber?
good with kids?
friendliness?
diet preparation?
mess?

you have to consider the personality you want

If you want a small, quiet, pretty, and independant bird that will still enjoy human companionship, then try a Mustache, or Ringneck Parakeet. They are 10-13 inches long and green with a purple ring around their neck. They can learn a few words, they are fine if you work long hours during the day, and are generally quiet, and when you get home they love to be handled and pet.

A cockatoo is a big, loud, attention grabber. For me personally if you consider a large cockatoo like and Umbrella, or Moluccan. I would reccomend you either have a multiple bird house or have someone who is home constantly. They need at least 2 hours of one on one physical social interaction a day. and they are large up to 20 inches.

Whatever bird you choose make sure you spend as much time with it as you can when your home, and provide a diet with .lots of fresh fruits and veggies. NEVER FEED chocolate or avacado will kill them.

Make sure you learn as much as you can about the bird you want or want to buy. You can never know too much.

This is something I was currently researching because we want to get a pet bird for my in-laws for Christmas. I talked to several bird owners and Vets and had it narrowed down to a Parakeet or Cockatiel. We have decided to get a Cockatiel. The male Cockatiels do a lot more whistling and can even try to talk. I even found a breeder with babies. The babies are 5 weeks old right now. We will be able to pick one up in a week or two. I am so excited, my In-Laws are going to love it.

I have society finches. They are so sweet and cute. They also sing really pretty in the morning. Only problem I have with them is that they LOVE to multiply (like rabbits), but I usually just sell the babies to the local pet store for about $15 a piece...then the store sells them for about $25....I think they are the nicest little birds around.

Well I have had about 29 different different types of birds.
Macaws, canarys, parakeets,parrolets.
Bunches.
I would say the best bird you can have.
Is a parakeet or a monk parrot.
Parakeets die easily though.
so i suggest you get a monk parrot.
There small, about the size of a soda can.
There cute, and you can teach them how to talk.
If u want to see pictures oif them . go to .

I used to have a cockateil. They are small and relatively easy to keep the birdcage clean. You can teach them to talk if you get them young enough.

My brother-in-law has a blue and gold macaw and an African grey parrot. They are bigger birds and make bigger messes and require larger cages.

a nice picture on the wall.

birds want to fly out in the open, not in a cage, why not support an organisation which protects wild birds instead of making one your prisoner?
