Depends on how many you have gotten and whether or not legal action had to be taken and if you worked it off or paid it off.

Having received traffic tickets in the past is no biggie, unless you received enough tickets to have you on a probationary license that would disqualify you from driving an emergency vehicle in your state--also, a lot of police agencies have strict rules about how many "no Insurance" tickets you've been issued (but again, depends if your state mandates automobile insurance)

Yes traffic tickets can prevent you from being hired with certain departments. Departments don't want someone driving their vehicles around that have a lot of citations. This shows that you can't follow the rules and also places the department in a certain amount of liability. For instance if you had a lot of speeding tickets, was speeding around in your patrol car and hit someone, the department is even more liable since they know that you have a history of speeding.

Most agencies frown on applicants with convictions for "D.U.I.", "Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle", and "Hit & Run". Other moving violations are usually ignored when considering an applicant for employement. However, if the applicant has, lets say, an outstanding parking ticket that has not been resolved, that too can hinder employment. It really depends on the department, and how well the applicant can persuade the hiring board to overlook the citation conviction(s).

Traffic tickets alone wont stop you from being a cop, but police departments look for individuals with lots of integrity. The more tickets you have, the more it shows the PD that you don't respect the law your being hred to defend.

Yes - absolutely 100% without question, yet. It is one of the biggest factors in disqualifying an otherwise qualified candidate.
Bottom line: No more than 1 moving violation in the past 3 years. Some will be more lenient.

It can. It also depends a big part on the agency in question. Multiple driving offenses can reflect a character and liability issue and the hiring agency may not want to take the risk. Ask an officer in the agency that you are interested in getting hired at. They can tell you and can give you more specifics.
