I am working with my 3year old daughter to go to the bathroom in the toilet, but she is having a hard time. She knows when she needs to go, but will just sit on the toilet (with a small seat), and nothing happens. Then when she gets off, and I put her diaper back on, she poops. I thought maybe it would be easier for her to go on a little plastic potty, so her feet are touching the ground. Have any of you tried both methods, and if so which way works better, or does it vary with each child?

Each child is different and each child will vary. Some people prefer to start with small potty chairs others with potty seats that go on a regular toilet. It just depends. You might try it and see and she may like that better. Pooping is always the most difficult for a child to learn. You just have to be patient and make sure you reward her well and make a HUGE production each time she goes. She will catch on soon enough! Good luck!

I think you should try the small potty and see how that works it probablly is that she cant reach the floor and she might be a little frightened by it. I bought my daughter a princess potty that you can use on the toilet or as a small potty is also turns into a stepping stool. She love to sit on it and sometimes she goes in it.
potty training is hard you have to take alot of time with them and patience! but I think you should try the small one or get a stepping stool so her feet can touch that at least.
good luck hope everything goes well!

Having raised and potty trained five children, three boys and two girls, I have to say the potty chair worked best. It's at a height comparable to the child. It's easily reached if they feel a need to go and you aren't at hand. There's no fear of falling in the hole and being flushed away. Their legs don't fall asleep because they aren't dangling over the edge of the large toilet's seat.
The boys loved "shooting" Cheerios that floated in the potty chair's pot. Their aim was much improved when using something that was their height.
They didn't mind sitting and reading a book while waiting for nature to make it's move.
They all agreed that the potty chair was less scary than that big toilet.

I train on the little potties and they are definitely easier. The child will feel more secure with both feet on the ground and support under the buttocks. It gives them the ability to move into a comfortable position and not worry about falling in.

I think it depends on your life style and what the kids are comfortable with.
I have heard some moms say that the seat that attaches is better because kids are more likely to use other bathrooms and they are as scared of the big boy/girl potty (especially in public)
I have also heard moms say that they like the mini potty because they can use it in any room of the house. I personally would not like that because I'd like my children to associate those functions with the appropraite room.
Personally, I'll try the attaching seat.
I'll wish you luck.

Do not allow her to wear her diaper to go poop! My son would bring me a diaper when he had to go and once I figured this out, no more diapers. Using the "big potty" is alot less mess for you, my daughter never used a potty chair. Also if you go to home-depot they sell potty seats that snap onto your toiletseat, baby will not "fall in" and they can sit for ever! (if that's what it takes) give them a supply of books! These seats are awesome and cost under 10.00. No mess is the best! You just flush!

Get her a step stool for the adult toilet. Children like to use things that are real. Put her in clothing that she can easily take on and off by herself, including some "big girl underwear." When you see doing the "potty dance" or you think it's time she should, say "I looks like you need to use the bathroom." Don't insist or she will resist. She is in control. If she soils herself, hope her completely responsible for the clean up. She can rinse out the soiled clothing, put them in the laundry, clean any dirty area and herself, then put on clean clothing. She will soon learn that it is much easier to use the bathroom. Make a big deal when she does use the bathroom. Say "You did it all by yourself!" Good luck!

I potty trained my daughter using a small potty chair and stickers. I would give her 2 stickers when ever she went in the potty. One to put on her shirt and one to put on her potty. When the potty lid was full of stickers I told her it was time to go in the big potty and the transition was really easy.
