It would appear to me that only the brave men and women enlisted in the military should get this honor. Also, the same with "FDNY" hats and apparel. Your thoughts?

You make good points...there is some gray area to consider.

flutter: Just so I am clear, you say camo has no connection to the military. So when you think of or see camo, you do not necessarily think of the military?

I just wanted to chime in here for all of you all that think that it is no big deal to the military men and women out there that you wear camouflage for "fashion". I will tell you right now it down right insults them to no bitter end. Most of you walk around in "camo" pants and we have even seen certain styles that look just like the military BDUs just not the real ones. For my husband that had to work for the honor of wearing that uniform it is an insult to him. It is an insult to him to see his uniform degraded everyday the way most of you wear it. I know that most of you don't think of it that way and you are all saying that hunters wear it and all of that but they also view it as a uniform and not fashion. What most of you don't understand is what goes into the right to wear that pattern, the blood, sweat, and even tears. They work for that honor, it is not a fashion it is not a right but rather it is an honor to them and it is something they have achieved, and not something they take lightly.

It depends, I think, on where they are and what their intentions are. Camo isn't just for the military, it's also worn by hunters and kids trying to make a fashion statement. Camo's not an American flag; it's a pattern, not a statement, though it does have military connotations.
FDNY hats are simply a way of showing solidarity with the men who died during the 9/11 attacks. But if you're wearing one to pick up chicks... then that's a problem, just like pretending to be in the military when you aren't isn't really an ethical thing to do.

Camouflage in and of itself, has no connection with the military, and therefore it is not disrespectful for civilians or anyone else to wear it.

Traditionally, camo is used to help the user blend into the surroundings...this is useful for hunters and the military etc. More recently, it has become a form of fashion, and I think that's okay too.

T-shirts, hats, bumper stickers or any other merchandise advertising a law-enforcement, military or fire departments are designed as a way to show "spirit" and support of those agencies. It is a sign of appreciation, pride and affection for those that give their lives so that we may live our lives the way we feel is right.

The FDNY raises money by selling those hats and T-shirts. Camoflauge is never tasteful to wear for civilians, it looks rediculous.

I don't think most people mean it in any disrespectful way. The camo is probably for fashion (although i don't know why...i always thought it was ugly).

And the FDNY ...I have a tshirt and I bought it to show my support.

some wear it in support of loved ones over seas or for genuine patriotic reasons. this is fine. those who wear it to look gangster or to look fashionable then no. camoflauge is for soldiers only and has no place in the mall or at work. just posers looking for attention or losers with no conscience.
