Do you realize that minorities can take the American citizenship test in THEIR LANGUAGE?! Not english but their native tongue!
Also the same goes for the driving test. When applying for welfare they are considered "disabled" for not knowing the english language. Therefore get approved!
There are good, hardworking Americans who can't get financial help when they become legitamately disabled because they are not "sick" enough! I have seen it happen people! My friend had end stage liver disease due to no fault of her own and was denied for medical coverage because she owned a 12 year old car! It was not worth more than 600$ and was told to sell it, spend all the money then reapply!
Yet, not knowing english or popping out countless kids is considered grounds for approval!
They come to our country to birth their brats because they will be born citizens therefore are eligable for our benefits.
We worked our a$$e$ off for years for them!?!

You have a choice on what language you want to take your citizenship test in.

Also no one is saying to forget your native tongue just do not expect us to fully accomodate you because you refuse to learn the language of the country you want to be a part of!
You want to be considered an American citizen then learn the damned language!
If I went to another country I would have to learn the language to survive and not be taken advantage of. That is common sense.
BTW how are we supposed to believe that these piss poor people who beg for welfare are continually having kids because they are in love and want to share that love with a child?!?!
If you can't afford to feed and clothe yourself how in the hell are you going to bring a defenseless innocent baby into your mess?
Are you nuts or just naive?

AND I QUOTE " Increasingly, this solemn ceremony is CONDUCTED IN SPANISH,
as the new citizens are UNABLE to FOLLOW in English"

The ceremony of what you ask: The "Oath of Allegiance" ceremony.

Imagine that. Your about to become a US citizen and you take the pledge to the United States in Spanish.

My boyfriends father had a Russian girlfriend who took the citizenship test in you guessed it Russian!

Call an immigration office if you do not believeme.

Not just minorities. ALL immigrants need to learn English before becoming American citizens.

Nope. Why should they? Are people here that cowardly? This "make 'em learn English" movement really makes the United States look bad, like we're afraid of anything that moves. I think we're better than this. Cpin also makes an excellent point. Should we strip citizenship from current citizens who haven't learned English? Perhaps we should have people take a test of the English language when they turn 18, and if you fail, you're outta here? That'd mean taking citizenship from quite a few people here on Yahoo Answers. If you're not willing to do that, you really don't have a case with respect to new citizens and the English language.

Sexywhitey as a good point. It's nonsense to be the citizen of a country and not being able to speak the language. Nevertheless, the way the concern is formulated stem from lack of information and xenophobia. As an immigrant myself, I recognize that there are abusers, but that does not mean that all are the same. What about corporate welfare? Why does she not complain about it? Does she know that, corporate America, although supplying the jobs is the worst parasite ever. I am not on welfare, and hope never to be; but let's stop judging others; let's try to put ourselves in other's shoe;let's be a little understanding. There is an old proverb that goes like this: "What you don't see in 100 years, you might see in one day ".No one knows what life has in store.
By the way, is stupidity a prerequisite to belong to the racist club?

This is what I said in a previous thread:

We, USA, have catered to the Spanish speaking community WAY too much! You can't leave the house without EVERYTHING being in English AND Spanish! This is NOT right! If they want to come to the USA, then they should HAVE to learn the language! You can't make a phone call without the freakin' announcement of English or Spanish! There shouldn't be an option! ENGLISH ONLY!

What about the deaf? What about the blind? USA doesn't cater to them even half like we should. I have two small children and I've been teaching them Spanish, not that I want to, but if I want them to keep up with this ever growing nonsense then I have to teach it to them. I also want them to know what people around them are saying and not have it be said behind their backs. I've also been teaching them sign language because that is something worthwhile and useful!

EXACTLY!!!

First I have to start saying to you that there is no perfect country or not perfect well-fare system. Second I am not born American, but I am American citizen and i did my test in English. I think that if this country is giving you so many opportunities the least you can do is learn the language. Also that will expand your opportunities of a better job, and a better life. I do think it should be mandatory the citizenship test in English but I also think is unfair to put elderly people to do the test in English, and now if they don't become citizens Social Security or Children's and Families cut their monthly checks. I think it should be mandatory for people till they are 65 years old, after that they should be able to choose in what language they wanted to be tested.

My short answer, is yes, I agree they should learn English before becoming citizens. My next comment is that where I live I am the minority (white citizen). Next, I too have serious health problems and took years to be called disabled enough to get medical care. I didn't know they could be called disabled for not knowing English. Are you sure this is a law? Or is it someone in the welfare office discriminating. There is alot of anti white discrimination at welfare because they assume we are all rich and just trying to cheat the system. They tend to favor people they assume are being discriminated against not realizing everyone else is doing that too and those people end up getting spoilt. Just hang in there.

Minorities? You should have said people of non-English speaking countries. I do believe that the citizenship test is only in English. I dont think it is necessary for ANYONE to have to learn English. It is beneficial, but what about people that live in places like Laredo, where the majority speak Spanish? Should those that speak English have to learn Spanish by force?? All children are a blessing, people dont have children just to "pop out a citizen" they do it because they want a family. If you have a problem with the laws, then talk to your representative, you voted for him!

Hey lady, open your closed mind.

Last time I checked it was OK to speak your own language in this country.

Why don't you look at Switzerland? They have 3 official languages, French, Italian and German, wow, what a bunch of ignoramuses! Why? Because those people hold the majority in that country and they are recognized.

That having been said, like it or not, Hispanic also are a majority here, so get used to the SPANISH.....It would do you GOOD to learn a second language and open your little mind....

Welcome to America, the most uneducated first world country!

Minorities' own language? I suppose that's why women are such bad drivers, they took their written driving test in Woman.

I'm pretty sure you're mistaken about this anyway. Although I would gladly take it back if you provided a link to a government website saying one could take their citazenship or driving test in whichever language they pleased. If this was true, you'd have no problem finding such a link.

englishfirst.org isn't really a legitimate academic source, but it doesn't mention anything you claim anyway. Furthermore, Spanish is recognized as an official language in New Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the city of Miami, which is why the site lists them as having bilingual ballots.

That is not true!! And I hate when people put something out there that is a damn lie, and they should know it if they are going to post it!!

You really wanted to vent against minority's, didn't you? Anything to make them look bad! It is people like you where some sickos get their dumb ideas!!

"A Guide to
Naturalization"

"This means that to be eligible for
naturalization, you must be able to read,
write, and speak basic English. You must
also have a basic knowledge of U.S.
History and Government (also known as
“civics”)."

And it won't be long until YOU are the minority. What are you going to do then!!

That was straight out of THE INS handbook, and though there may be a few exceptions, EVERYONE has to take the oath in English!!!!

A few does not mean everybody!
