Think of it as a Public Service.
Rational people visit this forum because they perceive it to be their moral responsibility and ethical duty to protect vulnerable minds from being contaminated by Bronze Age myths and willful ignorance. (Of course, I must honestly admit that there is an amusement factor involved as well.)
I prefer the term 'Rationalist', or 'Free Thinker', as opposed to 'atheist', since those terms capture more of the people who think that religious beliefs are stupid and irrelevant than the term 'atheist' does. Those terms capture the main reason that people BECOME Atheists... they have learned how to THINK. Once someone learns how to think properly, religious belief is one of the first casualties. Religious belief... particularly the Abrahamic cults of desert monotheism (Judaism, Christianity, Islam)... simply cannot withstand the glaring light of reason and critical thought. It just evaporates. Poof. The fact that you are asserting and promoting such ridiculous beliefs is a clear indication that you CAN'T (or WON'T) think.
Rational people recognize that some people who visit this forum are truly, sincerely seeking answers... with an open mind (willing to honestly consider alternative possibilities), and with intellectual honesty (willingness to freely question and doubt their own presumptions). That being the case, it is the MORAL OBLIGATION of rational people to HELP them keep their minds open, and to make them aware of some of those alternative possibilities. Inevitably, those alternative possibilities DO NOT include a terrarium earth, talking snakes and donkeys, demons, friendly spirits, evil spirits, raising from the dead, stopping the sun in its tracks, parting seas, world-wide floods, creating people from dust bunnies and ribs, magical trees of knowledge, gods speaking from burning bushes... and ritual cannibalism by eating your god in the form of a cracker.

So, when someone comes along in a PUBLIC FORUM, regurgitating the myths, superstitions, fairy tales and fantastical delusions of an ignorant bunch of Bronze Age fishermen and wandering goat herders, and declaring them to represent some kind of cosmic 'Truth' (without the least bit of credible evidence)... well, that just has to be confronted.
All faith-based religious belief is fully deserving of all the scorn and ridicule that can be heaped upon it. It is a simple matter of people with rational minds having a moral obligation to stand in opposition to willful ignorance. It is quite necessary that this be done, if we are to have any hope that the human race will survive and evolve to meet our full potential. So, when these myths, superstitions, fairy tales and fantastical delusions are presented and declared to 'Truth', in the venue of a PUBLIC FORUM, a confrontation is inevitable.
BUT... this is not about you, at all. No need to feel special. Nobody is trying to convert you, and get you to give up your ridiculous beliefs. That is hopeless... you are already irretrievably deluded.

In order to have a rational view of the universe, it is necessary that one possess the mental faculties that facilitate reason, logic and critical thought. The things that are entailed by your beliefs demonstrate beyond any doubt that you lack those capabilities. Don't despair, though; you do serve a useful purpose on this earth... as a classic 'bad example'. You obligingly provide assertions about impossible happenings and circumstances, and magical delusions, and glaring misconceptions about science and nature and the universe... which can then be rationally confronted and exposed, and their preposterousness revealed. Thank you.
Again... nobody is trying to convert you... we are trying to protect people FROM you, and the insidious mind killing delusions and willful ignorance which you seek to spread, as if they were some kind of organized, dogmatic insanity virus.
However, rational people DO respect your right, in the privacy of your own mind, to delude yourself in whatever fashion you deem fit.
I don't know whether you're aware of it or not, but science, reason, critical thought have long been regarded as the enemies of religion. Considering that those are the tools of highly intelligent people, it should not come as a shock to you that intelligence (or lack of it) has some connection to religious belief. In fact, there are about 20 studies, conducted over a period of 80 years, that reveal a statistically significant NEGATIVE correlation between intelligence and religiosity. In plainer language, they found that the more intelligent a person is, the LESS likely he is to be religious.
If you think about it, this makes a lot of sense. Intelligence tests mainly provide an indication of reasoning ability and problem solving ability... critical thought. These are the very qualities that see through religion, and recognize it for what it is; i.e., religion cannot survive the glaring light of reason and critical thought. This was well understood by important figures in religious history. This is why the early church destroyed all the writings that were in conflict with dogma, such as Greek philosophical, medical and mathematical knowledge... which led directly to the Dark Ages.
Just to illustrate the point, let's see what Martin Luther, the 'father' of protestantism, had to say about it:
"Reason must be deluded, blinded, and destroyed. Faith must trample underfoot all reason, sense, and understanding, and whatever it sees must be put out of sight and ... know nothing but the word of God." ~ Martin Luther
"Reason is the Devil's greatest wh*re; by nature and manner of being she is a noxious wh*re; she is a prostitute, the Devil's appointed wh*re; whore eaten by scab and leprosy who ought to be trodden under foot and destroyed, she and her wisdom ... Throw dung in her face to make her ugly. She is and she ought to be drowned in baptism... She would deserve, the wretch, to be banished to the filthiest place in the house, to the closets." ~ Martin Luther
"Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has; it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but -- more frequently than not -- struggles against the divine Word, treating with contempt all that emanates from God." ~ Martin Luther
"There is on earth among all dangers no more dangerous thing than a richly endowed and adroit reason... Reason must be deluded, blinded, and destroyed." ~ Martin Luther
"Reason should be destroyed in all Christians." ~ Martin Luther
Christianity is nothing more than a criminal business enterprise... in fact, it is the world's longest running and most successful Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) scam. But, it only works on those who are gullible enough to fall for it. Unfortunately, there are a lot more people who DON'T know how to think than there are people who DO know how to think. That is why there are a lot more religious people in the USA than there are 'tree-thinkers'... including Atheists. Also, Christians are generally too dense to realize that prosletizing (spreading the 'good news') is a key element of the Christian MLM MARKETING PLAN, which was instituted after Christianity lost the political power that had previously allowed them to simply torture and kill anybody who did not comply. Now, they attempt to just pester people to death, through persistent obliviousness and obnoxiousness.
Interestingly, statistics on religious belief count the USA with backward, developing Third World nations, rather than among modern, advanced industrial powers. How does it feel to be a contributor to that backwardness?

There's no one single answer. First, it depends on the question. Some questions, though spiritual, don't require a belief in God to answer. Some people are just jerks and like to annoy everybody by answering "there is no God" no matter what the question is. These are probably the same people who are not entirely secure in their own beliefs.
But some people are just trying to tell you about their own belief the same as you tell about yours. The belief in no God is still a belief and thus has a place here. People of a different faith than you (even atheists) might see you as casting doubt on their belief by expressing yours, so in that sense, they do cast doubt.

First of all, not all atheists answer questions which do not pertain to them. I do not recall every responding to a questions that required a faith based answer, however I will respond to anything that presents false information, or contradicts scientific facts.
Second you can erase that delusion from your mind that atheists are the only one here that respond to question not pertinent to them. I have asked many atheist specific questions, and bible-thumping morons always need to say something irrelevant.
Third, atheists do not dismiss god because "we can not see it happening". We dismiss god, because there is no evidence god exists, and god has more in common with the tooth fairy and Zeus, then with an existing being. Further, it is typically theists that dismiss something because they can not see it happening; i.e. evolution, or any of the other scientific theories and principals which can not be witnessed in a human life-span.

Oh. (Disappointed frown) I thought you said that you were thinking.
Why do christians and republicans and haters go to the glbt section to hate, bash, tear down and forever damn those folks? Or better yet, recruit or "save"? Is it that they just can't believe in love, in all of it's forms? Or is it that they don't know how to love unconditionally? Could it be that they can't wrap their heads aroudn the idea of God loving EVERYONE without question, and not just them?
What's your take?

It wouldn't be very enlightening if all we had here were religious people applauding each others' unsupported assertions, now would it? Any honest search for truth *necessarily* includes alternative options from which we choose that which is most consistent with reality, by virtue of reason and evidence. Hence people should *want* to see various contrasting points of view expressed here, if they're intellectually honest.

The Bible says that where ever we will go, satan will be ahead of us. We have to fight him, so Jesus' teaching can prevail. I would take joy in the fact that at least they are taking the time of day to read and answer you questions, because if you post a good thought provoking one, maybe it will lead one to the truth. Keep doing what you are doing, and stay strong in your faith. God bless

Maybe because they want people to see that other beliefs exist, and that other options are available to them. Or they want to dispel myths about atheists. Or maybe they just want to try and change your beliefs. But I can tell you that it isn't because they don't know what to believe. Either way, you should ultimately be happy that they are posting. If someone is religious only because they haven't looked at any other option then that is sad. One should have faith because they feel its right....not because they don't know any better.

I don't know. I don't see why they aren't more accepting to other religions. I had a frined on myspace that said she was tired of all the religious bulletins. I appologized & told her that if she doesn't want to accept those bulletins then she should only associate with people with the same beliefs. I was a bit upset of her inability to accept other religions.

not ALL of them answer faith questions... mostly the ones who answer are angry at Christians or just plain like to joke around.
personally, i like to hear WELL THOUGHT out answers from Christians and non alike. as a Christian, i think it creates a better understanding.
so, what im saying is just dont take it personal (you do know there is a spiritual war constantly at hand, dont you?)
God bless.

Poor atheists, they spend all of their lives defending themselves against something they don't believe in, and when they die, they are all dressed up and have no place to go.
They don't grasp the word of God because their minds are closed to truth, to accept God means to accept that they are not in control of their lives, and there are absolute truths.
