Almost every weight trainer and athlete takes whey protein.
Whey protein is absorbed very quickly in comparison to other proteins, and it is lower in calories and fat than the average alternative. Because of this, I think it's best taken as your first meal of the day and your first one after your workout.
It's made from milk and does not have a bunch of nasty chemical processes and added ingredients so it's very safe. The olny thing I watch out for is the cholesterol. Some go up almost to 30%, but there are many with less than ten, some are even 0.
It usually contains 18 out of the essential 20 amino acids. The other 2 are carnatine and either tyrosine or taurine, I forget. It also is highly concetrated in branch chain amino acids, wich are very important for develpoing muscle mass and transporting/using proteins. It is also high in the amino acid l-glutamine, which is probably the most important for beefing up your muscle cells.
In case you didn't know, amino acids are the building blocks of protein.
You should also cycle it with other supplements. I think soy is the other best powder. It takes a long time to absorb but I actually like that, and use it to provide a constant "synchronized" supply of protein. Take it at the opposing times of whey (before bed and before woring out).
Of course eating a healthy well balanced diet is always the best way to provide your self with the adequeate amount of protein, but who does that? Just supplement any extra protein needs with, well, your supplement, which would be whey.
If you are looking to stay slim, drink it with water. If you are trying to beef up, drink it with milk. You can also add glutamine powder with it, but don't bother with those other amino acid supplements, they're a waste of your time and money for the small and inadequete amount included. You probalby want to take....
Your body weight (in pounds) multiplied by 0.8 to 1.2 grams of protein. Not whey supplements, this is al the protein you eat in one day. Whey generally ranges from 20 to 40. Read the label. A glass of milk has about 8 grams, soy milk is usually 6, again the label. As for unlabled things, eh, an ounce of meat ranges from 20 to 40 grams. Depends on the meat. For example, a chicken breast is usually about 35g. Check out canned tuna, especially packed in olive oil.
Speaking of oil, you need fatty acids and oils in order to maintain your muscle mass. And you need carbs to absrob the protein or exercise. Also plenty of water, being that your muscles are 60 to 75% water.

If you eat a well balanced diet and time your protein intake, you will not need to supplement with any protein. however, to ensure that you are getting the proper amount of protein, I would suggest no more than a glass of protein shake per day for only 5 days per week. There are many chemicals and unnatural substances in protein shakes that are best left out of your system.
instead of protein shake, try eating something with proteni in it every meal of the day. you should be eating 3 square meals and 2-3 snacks so try to include protein in your snacks such as yogurt, nuts, egg whites, or any other HEALTHY snack high in protein. If you do this, your body will constantly be absorbing protein all day. The human body has a protein absobtion rate. If you eat too much protein at one time, your body will not absorb al lof it which is why it's important to get yoru protein little by little throughout the day so that you know that if you consume 10 grams of protein in one meal, you are absorbing all of it. It is quite a waste to ingest 100 grams and only absorb 20 of it meanwhile all the other extra calories are sticking to you in the form of FAT.

Yes, i drink 2-3 fourty gram shakes every day. I "works" by giving me more energy throughout the day and helps build muscle and increase recovery time. I recommend 1 gram per pound of body weight of protein everday.

I use whey protein for my morning shake. It does work well but you should not use it as your only source of protein, it will cause excessive oxydation and which could promote bacterial growth.
