this year we've decided to take a cruise. does anyone have any advice on what ship to cruise on and where to cruise to?

Some basic yet important considerations to ponder(I am a traveller and Owner of a Travel Agency):
1-When considering a cruise ship, are amenities very important to you? Do you like to be active on the ship? Or are you more into deboarding and doing lots of sightseeing?
2-The ship's mentality. There are cruise ships that have the reputation of being what I call "party" boats, there are cruise ships that cater to a more "mature" crowd, and some cruise ships are "themed"(Cunard is a good example. They are for the most part refined by nature both in the crew, the passengers, and the activities onboard). Something to consider.
3-Is there a destination that you and your cruising partner talk about more than others? Sometimes that's an indication of where you may possibly want to go.
4-Do you have a timeline and a Travel budget you're trying to stick to?
What you may also want to consider is that when people recommend ships and destinations, it is ususally based on their experiences and also their preferences and tastes, which may or may not mirror yours. And really at the end of the day this is YOUR cruise, not theirs. The most important consideration is the age of the people on the cruise. If young adults are cruising, then Carnival and Royal Caribbean are the only way to go. The passengers on the other lines are usually 50+. If the cruisers are older, Holland America and Celebrity are fantastic.
For me, 7 days is the minimum. And you should have at least one or two days at sea. As far as where to go is a tough one. All the itineraries are fun. If you plan a transatlantic or round trip to Hawaii, you have to plan for 5 - 7 days at sea without land. That's tough. We did a Panama Canal cruise last year, and some of the ports in Central America are pretty disappointing.
Eastern or Western Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, or Alaska will always be crowd pleasers. I hope you have a great time!

Costa cruises are brilliant. Expensive on board, but worth the extra. Delicious food and very good staff. We went on the Costa Europa and it has lovely antiques on board. Happy cruising.

It will largely depend on your budget, type of cruise experience you want, length, and where you want to visit.
Lower end (but still good)-- Carnival (huge ships, fun, family and single oriented)
Higher end - Princess, Holland America, Disney, Royal Carribean, Norweigan (Disney is family oriented obviously, the others arer various levels of luxury etc.)
Special - Celebrity (smaller ships, expensive), Windjammer (sailing boats-- small ship- coupel hundred people)

Depends on your likes and dislikes. You need to do some work and investigate the different lines and itineraries.
