My daughter has a discoloration of the right arm and hand, and has had it since she was little. Now i've noticed the hand and arm on the right side are larger. Has anyone ever heard of this and , and what could it be? Yes i have asked the doctor, tells me not to worry about it. But i can't help but be concerned about it. Serious answers only please.

i forgot to mention that she is nine, and that the difference in the size of her hand and arm are noticeably different. The discoloration starts on her shoulder and continues down her whole arm . Its kind of a red splotchy looking discoloration.

Well it depends on her age.. if she's still growing.. then that's what it could be. Sadly, not everything grows together! If it's a really noticiable problem.. and it doesn't seem to get any different in a few years..then maybe you can go further with it. But.. some people are just born that way! Damn genetics!

Again, like the Dr said.. don't worry about it. We've all been through the growing stage and know how awkward it can get. Try not to point it out too much.. don't wanna make the girl nervous or anything--especially feel bad about herself!

Better point--I remember quite a few female friends back when we were 11, 12, 13, etc..and a few of them started to sprout boobs..and yeah--I remember a few of those girls who had 1 boob smaller then the other. That didn't last long though, so good for them.

I feel the same thing will happen with her, and she will grow into herself :)

EDIT: Sorry, I missed the discoloration part. Well that also goes to what exactly you mean. If you are white, and her hand/arm has a yellowish or another color to it..then I'd be concerned. My father has a problem (I forget what it's called) but it has to do with the pigmentation in his skin. He has some areas that are almost pink on him. Not covered in it. And not pink like hot pink--more on a light pink, close to really white.

If it is a pigmentation.. usually that lasts forever. Nothin to worry about, but that'll last forever.

It could be that your child's arms are receiving different levels of blood flow.. i.e. the right arm is receiving more blood than the left. If the discolouration is pink/red/dark relative to the left then this helps to confirm. If one side continues to receive more blood than the other than the better supplied side will grow more than the less well supplied side. You could ask the doctor to check blood flow for both arms (blood pressure check with a spigometer?)

Ask for an ultrasound of the arteries supplying the arms, that may indicate an asymetric supply, and is less dangerous than CT or MRI with contrast.

If she is right handed, it is normal for that arm to be a little bit larger than the left.

Is your daughter right hand dominate?(right handed) You don't say how much bigger one hand is than the other, however using one hand/arm more then the other could cause more muscularity in the dominate hand and arm. as to the discoleration, does she ride in the car with the darke hand exposed to the sun?

Check with another doctor. It depends on the age of the child but I would look for a better answer. Good luck.
