Its nothing. The injection is far better than the pain without it.

If you are good-looking, I will help shove your bottom through the door. Injections hurt like crazy - even worse than the fillings ( which is accompanied by high-pitched sceaming-frequencies, the like of which will make you deficate yourself, and brown the danties ( best wear something you wouldn't show your mates ) ( I personally think the noise is the worse, and it is sadists that have invented it to be extra cruel )). They will then ask you to spit some horrible blue drink-crap into a bowl, and you are so in pain you may miss and like a nutcase you will apologise for the bleeding mess on the flooor ! But never apologise bunny - that is what they are wanting. They will start again if you do that.
Then they will ask you if everything is OK. At this point restrain yourself. One day they will get theirs.
Then you pay for the twating, and you go home and cannot eat, and if you do it brings the bastard filling out, and the whole process starts again - after you wait a sodding 13 weeks for another tossing appointment and in pain always. So good bloody luck you poor get.
However, the science of dentistry is progressing, and we are fortunate to live in a technologically - advanced country. Now play the National Antham most applicable to you, and get a gun for the bastards.

Contrary to widely held belief, The injection is not necessarily Novacain. Novecain is one of the many brands of Local Anaesthetic that is used. The brand your dentist uses depends on what one he wants to go for. Like cough medicine from boots, buttercup and beechams, they all do the same thing in the same way (a needle injection to place local numbing agent in the gum to temporarily paralyse the nerves to allow work to procceed), but are made by different labs.
The needle will not cause pain as it pricks the gum, the most painful thing is the liquid acctually entering the gum when the body is tense.
Therefore:
Relax
Breathe normally (Regulate your breathing)
Dont tense up
Trust your Dental preffesional that he knows what he is doing
If this is your first filling under anaesthetic, ask your dentist if he will walk you through what he is doing as he is doing it, I am sure he would be happy to.
Lastly, My personal opinion is to disagree with the advice of going without it, but thats just my preconception of what the pain could be like.

Insist your dentist puts some Novocaine on a cotton wool pad and holds it to the gum until it is numb. Then do your best to relax your mouth (easy to say!). There's no excuse for an injection being any more than a discomfort in this day and age, this is not Victorian England.
I find the worst bit is the noise of the drill, so take an mp3 player and listen to music. Its all less uncomfortable than toothache.

Relax, not a big deal. The injection is not bad. Most dentists now even rub the gum with a numbing gel before the injection so that you don't even feel that. If you have a good dentist you'll have no problems.

Yes it is called nova cane. Usually the dentist puts a topical on sort of like orajel only a 1000 times stronger before the injection. Tell the dentist you nos. and I promise you won't fell a thing. maybe some pressure and that's it.

Ask your dentist if you can try without and see how it goes. If you do need an injection ask him to put on some topical anaesthetic first this makes the injection a bit more bearable.

They probably mean an injection of novacaine to numb it. Some cavaties require it, others do not. If you need it, it's probably because it's close to the nerve and if you don't have it it's gonna hurt like all hell.
Yes, it hurts- it's a hot. However, if you don't have it the pain will be unimaginably bad!

THEY MIGHT HAVE TO FILE DOWN YOUR TOOTH. I HAVE BEEN TO THE DENTIST LITERALLY ABOUT 230 TIMES...AND I'M ONLY 21! I HAVE HAD INJECTIONS AND THEY ARE TERRIFYING TO LOOK AT, BUT ONLY PRICK FOR A TINY BIT. THEN THE WHOLE PART GETS NUMB FOR HOURS SO YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO FEEL ANYTHING. AS LONG AS YOU ARE MENTALLY PREPARED, YOU SHOULD BE FINE. EVERYONE GOES THROUGH IT HON.PLUS, MOST DENTISTS RUB YOUR GUMS WITH A NUMBING GEL(ORAJEL TYPE BUT TASTES MUCH BETTER) SO YOU CAN BARELY FEEL IT
