This passage is from Mark 6:
1 (A)Jesus went out from there and came into (B)His hometown; and His disciples followed Him.
2 When the Sabbath came, He began (C)to teach in the synagogue; and the (D)many listeners were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands?
3 "Is not this (E)the carpenter, (F)the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not (G)His sisters here with us?" And they took (H)offense at Him.
4 Jesus said to them, "(I)A prophet is not without honor except in (J)his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household."
5 And He could do no miracle there except that He (K)laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.
6 And He wondered at their unbelief. (L)And He was going around the villages teaching.
(I got this from BibleGateway and it is the New American Standard Version. The letters in () are notes)

What I'm asking is why does being in the presence of unbelievers make Jesus unable to work miracles?

I read this passage several times in my life--but did not even think of this until I read an article about how a lot of people who claim to contact your dead relatives and stuff don't like to work around skeptics--only people who will not question their ability.

Lack of faith on mankind's part blocks the power of God from working in our life. It wasn't that Jesus Christ couldn't, it was the lack of faith on mans part that stopped Him. His purpose was to bring mankind to the Father, to give The Father Glory, they would not accept His words or that His power was from the Father, and that negativity didn't drain His powers, but would have been a waste of His time, in a sense, the Father would not get the glory and praise He deserved.
I can tell my family things that the Holy Spirit has shown me, or given to me, and more times than not I am just the daughter or sister and my words are not taken to heart, but someone else can go and tell them the same thing and they will listen with their all.

No, Jesus' power wasn't dependant on our faith. But Jesus never did anything without the express instruction and permission of God the Father.
I suspect in this case, God disallowed miracles because of the people's open hostility to his Son.

in case you imagine it is undesirable, how do you imagine Muslims experience about the a million.5 billion or so Mohammeds? in my opinion I felt the popular of xmas/yuletide presents bypass downhill in spite of everything sorts of individuals all started dressing up in purple suits with white beards. i imagine they can get around the Jesus dilution as long as they use the middle 'H' initial. Edit: Yeah, yet prayers at the prompt are held in an computerized queueing device besides. via system faults contained in the device, there is now a postpone of about one hundred two decades in getting them answered, besides the undeniable fact that no one looks to have stated a lot. they quite don't have shriveled that organization out to those purple dudes with horns, tails and tridents.

Jesus was never powerless. Remember when He stood before Pilate and Pilate asked Him "what is truth?" Jesus was silent and did not reply. He knew Pilate didn't have ears to hear. Jesus told His followers not to cast "pearls before swine"...this means, don't give Godly things to those who have no capacity to understand them.
Jesus saw the unbelief and chose not to do anything, in essence, not to cast his "pearls before swine".

LOL. Well, if Jesus is God, and God is affected by people not believing in him...that doesn't say much for his Godhood, doesn't it? That'd make him pretty darned wimpy for a God.
Maybe didn't want to waste his time there? (with the unbeleivers).
Who knows.

It did NOT make Him powerless. He only performer miracles for BELIEVERS. They were unbelievers. Their lack of faith kept Him from performing miracles.

if Jesus is real than unbelievers can not lessen his power.....
maybe he didn't feel like doing a miracle there because he was so disgusted by those who didn't believe....
maybe he only healed people that believed....

I would think these are the people you want to convert most of all.
So, unbelievers are like green Kryptonite?

No. He might be sad at how pathetic we are but we do not drain him. His love for us is too powerful.
