Both of my daughters have the American Girl Babies. They received them for Christmas from their grandparents last year. Personally, I think they are a little too ostentatious for just a doll... I probably would not purchase one myself for them simply because there are several other dolls out there for much less money. My children don't care about the "brand" of doll, just as long as they have one to play with.
