He talks non-stop when it's just me around but, get him in front of people and he freezes up.

African Greys are very intelligent and have a stubborn streak. Your Grey is catually sizing people up before he talks to them. Also, beware. If you do something to a Grey that he does not like, he will get angry and will not forget until he gets you back. He will look for an opportunity for months.

Greys remind me of cats, personality wise. They are very reserved creatures. They don't like to talk in front of people they don't know.

When I brought mine home, it was over a week before I ever heard him say a word. When I would meet new boyfriends and such, it would take him weeks to warm up to them enough to talk in front of them.

My Amazons and Macaws are just the opposite. The more people in the room, the louder they get. They have more child-like, comical personalities.

If you want your friends to hear him talk, have them come into the house quietly. Don't let your bird see or hear them. You can go on in to where your bird is and he should be his usual self and talk up a storm(not realizing that your friends are there).
